The Tuesday Legen Seminar of Semarang State University (UNNES) will present the theme of the seminar “Sources of Dance Creation: From the Palace to the Coast” at the 116th seminar, Monday (April 28, 2024), at Kampung Budaya, at 19.30-22.00 WIB.
The Organizing Committee of Tuesday Legen, Suseno SPd MA, said that the theme of this seminar was carried out in order to commemorate World Dance Day 2025. According to him, dance in Indonesia has a wealth of diverse sources of creation and reflects the social, cultural, and historical dynamics of its society. One way to understand this diversity is to trace the origins of its creation, starting from the palace environment which is full of symbolism and structure, to coastal areas that are open to cultural acculturation and more fluid expressions.
In Javanese traditional dance, the palace environment is the source of the birth of various forms of classical dance that emphasize the aesthetics of refinement, discipline of movement, and strong symbolic meaning. Meanwhile, coastal areas offer a space for cultural mixing, ranging from local elements, cultural influences from outside the region, to elements of religiosity that add richness to artistic values and social meanings in developing dance works. Both of these sources have important contributions in the formation of dance identity—both as a cultural heritage and as inspiration for new creations in the contemporary era.
The Selasa Legen Event Division, Dr. Dhoni Zustiyantoro, the seminar will present resource persons Dr. Daryono, a dance practitioner who is a retired lecturer at ISI Surakarta and Drs. Bintang Hanggoro Putra MHum, a dance practitioner and retired lecturer at FBS UNNES. The seminar will be moderated by Dr. Riris Setyo Sundari, a lecturer at Universitas PGRI Semarang and an alumnus of the Doctoral Program in Art Education UNNES.
