Values are relatively stable beliefs about specific models of desired behavior and the desired end state of the environment. Value is something that is abstract, but understood and understood by the user community. Value is something that can perfect humans according to their nature and has moral weight when integrated into certain moral behavior.
Value cannot be separated from character. Character determines one’s thoughts and actions. Good character is the existence of intrinsic motivation to do what is good according to the highest standards of behavior in every situation. Good character must have three aspects, namely moral knowledge, moral feelings, and moral behavior.
UNNES has formulated conservation character values which include inspirational, humanist, caring, innovative, creative, sporty, honest and fair character values.
Inspirational character values are an awareness in the individual self to care and want to give messages, both verbally and in action, which stimulate enlightenment, creativity or effective effort, determination, and happiness to others which are reflected in attitudes and behavior in interacting with their environment. . Inspirational character is embodied in the mindset and behavior patterns of individuals who are directed to share and instill enthusiasm and positive energy in others around them.
Inspirational character values must be implemented by all UNNES citizens, both on campus and outside campus. To be able to carry out these character values, campus residents must know indicators of inspirational character values so that their behavior is correct and aligned. Indicators of inspirational character values are giving hope, giving motivation, always being the first, wanting to always be remembered, thinking positively about something, increasing the curiosity of others, being a helper, willing to sacrifice time, mind, energy, and possessions, always renewing oneself, and liking read.
A humanistic person can be described as a person who has self-awareness, is wise, is aware of his limitations, so he often takes a reasonable attitude, is open, and sees various possibilities. A humanistic person is someone who is open, tolerant, able to respect other people’s beliefs, and able to see the positive behind differences.
To internalize humanistic values into UNNES citizens, a philosophical and empirical basis is needed. The philosophy is based on the Tri Dharma which means feeling of belonging, obligation to protect, self-awareness and self-control for the sake of togetherness in achieving goals. The empirical foundation consists of logical, realistic, ethical, and aesthetic. Indicators of humanist character values are not self-assertive, prioritizing harmony and harmony in life, being tolerant, not easily in conflict with others, giving in, being polite, respecting others, having sympathy and empathy, loving peace, and being able to control oneself.
The character value of caring is a form of caring that is not only oriented to oneself, but also to a system. The concern that is embedded in the caring movement is a movement to strengthen social conservation that emerged earlier, not only giving birth to activities that are ritualistic in nature. Indicators of caring character values are sympathy, empathy, helpfulness, altruism, giving, initiative, self-sacrifice, not prioritizing profit, prioritizing the use of others, and sincerity.
To increase the innovative character, every citizen is given the opportunity to experiment and is also given the freedom over the possibility of failure. Implementation of innovative character development is carried out with an educative, communicative, and exemplary approach. Innovative character value indicators are resourceful, lots of ideas, not easy to give up, always want to be the best, work to get satisfaction, have a willingness to produce new findings, able to think quickly and precisely, think logically, carefully and in detail, always take the initiative , and always eager to contribute.
Creative thinking has the characteristics of fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, and redefinition. Indicators of creative character values are having a lot of sense, having lots of ideas, not giving up easily, being sure what is proposed is good and right, thinking from all directions, paying attention to the process, being able to think quickly and precisely, respecting the views of others, always taking the initiative, and give the best.
Sportsmanship values and character are based on the ancient philosophy of Olympism. These values can be manifested in everyday life in society and as a nation. The values and character contained in sportsmanship include excellence, friendship, respect, fair play, and integrity.
Indicators of the value of sportsmanship are acknowledging that others are right, upholding the truth, liking goodness, sure what God thinks, says and does, believes that what is done will be rewarded, does not want what is done to harm others, not always take advantage, can accept defeat, do not like to cheat, and willing to admit that what he did was wrong.
Honesty is a value that must be internalized to all UNNES stakeholders. Strategies for internalization efforts include informal speech, formal delivery of messages on various occasions using various media, internalization of honesty through the educational process in the classroom, efforts to provide education involving focused targets, and reporting.
Indicators of honest character values are speaking as it is, sportsmanship, no hidden facts, sure what God thinks, says and does, believes that what is done will be rewarded, intolerant of negative actions, not two-faced, cares about the fate of others, shame when doing bad deeds, and no soul to ask.
The implementation of the value of justice for the academic community is divided into two parts, namely the implementation of the individual as a member of the academic community and the implementation of the value of individual justice as a member of society. Indicators of fair character values are non-discriminatory, impartial, not prioritizing oneself, deciding based on provisions, prioritizing obligations, being able to maintain a balance between rights and obligations, being consistent, accepting whatever is decided, accepting the consequences of what has been done, and weighing something before decided.
