Semarang, October 17, 2025 — An atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm for learning permeated the outing for the Bintang Juara Islamic Elementary School class at the UNNES Ecofarm, Semarang State University. This activity was part of the introductory phase of Project Based Learning (PBL) with the theme “Preserving Living Things through Plant/Animal Cultivation.”
A total of 47 third-grade students, accompanied by five teachers, participated in this educational activity. The group was warmly welcomed by the Head of the UNNES Conservation Sub-Directorate, Prof. Dr. Nana Kariada Tri Martuti, M.Si., who also provided an introductory presentation on the importance of preserving living things through cultivation and environmental conservation activities.
In her remarks, Prof. Nana Kariada stated that this type of activity is an important step in fostering environmental awareness from an early age.
“Children need to be introduced to nature not only as a place to learn, but also as a friend that must be protected and preserved. Through cultivation activities, they learn responsibility, perseverance, and a love for the environment,” she said.
During the activity, students were actively involved in field practices that included planting seedlings, caring for plants, and an introduction to the environmentally friendly farming system at UNNES Ecofarm. Under the guidance of the conservation team, the children learned how to plant tomatoes and learned about the hydroponic system used to grow bok choy.
As a result of their learning, each student took home their own tomato seedlings and bok choy harvest, providing a tangible experience of a fun and meaningful learning process.
This activity is expected to foster a sense of environmental awareness and a spirit of conservation from an early age, while strengthening the synergy between UNNES, a conservation campus, and a primary education institution that embraces the vision of character education and sustainability.
