Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) students participating in the GIAT 12 Community Service Program (KKN) carried out a community service program in the form of installing an Early Warning System (EWS) in Pagertoyo Village, Limbangan District, Kendal Regency, Central Java, on Sunday (August 13, 2025).
This installation is a concrete effort to increase community preparedness for the threat of landslides, which frequently plague the area.
The EWS system was installed in response to Pagertoyo Village’s geographical location, which poses a high risk of landslides, especially during the rainy season. The device detects ground movement and provides early warnings to the community through a siren.
Filippo Elang Prayoga, Coordinator of UNNES GIAT 12 KKN in Pagertoyo Village, explained that the EWS is expected to minimize casualties and material losses due to landslides.
“With the EWS, residents can receive early warnings so they can immediately protect themselves and their valuables,” he said.
The Pagertoyo Village community welcomed the installation of this device. According to them, the EWS is a crucial step in anticipating disaster risks.
“At least now we have an alarm that can signal danger before a landslide actually occurs,” said one resident hopefully.
In addition to installing the EWS, UNNES GIAT 12 Community Service Program students also carry out various other community service programs that directly benefit the community. Their presence is expected to increase community knowledge and preparedness in facing disasters.
The EWS system installation program in Pagertoyo Village is expected to become a model for community service that can be implemented in other areas with similar disaster risks. This initiative also emphasizes the role of universities as agents of change and community partners in sustainable development.
