On Sunday, September 17, five international students from Semarang State University (UNNES) participated in the 12th Semarang Old Town Festival 2023. They exhibit interest in the kebaya, one of the traditional garments distinctive to their homeland, in addition to displaying pride in Indonesian culture.
The Semarang Old City Festival is a yearly celebration of the city’s history and vibrant culture. This festival offers a variety of traditional and cutting-edge cultural events, including artistic performances and handicraft exhibitions.
The UNNES students from Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine chose to participate in the activity to learn more about the culture of their home countries. The five students are Aisu Zhumalieva (Bachelor of Economics Education), Periza Abdilova Abdilovna (Bachelor of English Education), Lytvynenko Tetiana (Master of Indonesian Language), and Aziza Niiazova (Master of Laws). Elizaveta Lebedeva is enrolled in the Non-Degree Darmasiswa Program.
The five international students dressed in very well-groomed kebayas for the celebration, which took place in the Kota Lama region. Together with 100 women from Semarang’s schools and kebaya communities, they made their selections from a wide range of hues and patterns, fusing tradition and innovation in a stunning way.
Elizaveta Lebedeva, a Russian student who was one of the international participants, expressed her pride at the chance to represent UNNES in the Kebaya millennial march.
“Kebaya is a representation of Indonesian elegance and beauty. I was overjoyed to be able to wear it and revel in my princess-like status. As she continued to straighten her outfit, Liza commented, “This is an unforgettable cultural experience.
Prof. Dr. S. Martono, M.Si., Chancellor of UNNES, expressed his satisfaction that international students attended the Semarang Old City Festival. He underlined the value of cross-cultural interaction among local and international students in enhancing the educational process.
By taking part, international students at UNNES have helped to raise awareness of the depth of Indonesian culture around the world. Their involvement serves as an illustration of how culture can serve as a powerful link for appreciating, respecting, and comprehending differences.
