The Conservation Group of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) initiated the provision of a breastfeeding (lactation) room on campus. The facility was symbolically inaugurated by the Dean of FISIP, Prof. Arif Purnomo, M.Sc., with the cutting of a tumpeng (rice cone) and a communal prayer on the first floor of the FISIP Dean’s Office, Sekaran Campus, on Friday (August 15th).
The initiative was initiated by Rudi Salam and Nining Wahyuningsih, under the direction of the FISIP Dean. According to Nining, who has experience as a “breastfeeding champion,” the breastfeeding room fulfills the right of working mothers to exclusively breastfeed their children.
“This room ensures that mothers can continue to breastfeed even while at the office,” said Nining.
The Head of the FISIP Conservation Group, Rudi Salam, added that the provision of a breastfeeding room aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Healthy and Prosperous Lives), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality).
“This facility supports maternal and child health, strengthens gender equality in the workplace, and provides equal opportunities for all mothers,” he explained.
The Dean of FISIP UNNES, Prof. Dr. Arif Purnomo, S.Pd., S.S., M.Pd., expressed his appreciation for the Conservation Group’s efforts in providing this facility.
“The breastfeeding room is a manifestation of FISIP’s commitment to supporting health, gender equality, and reducing inequalities. With adequate and comfortable facilities, we create a more inclusive work environment,” he said.
Going forward, it is hoped that this breastfeeding room will be optimally utilized, serve as a good practice example for other work units at UNNES, and inspire other educational institutions and agencies to provide similar facilities to support the well-being of mothers and children.
