Mencari Relevansi Sejarah di Era Digital

170 lebih mahasiswa baru Ilmu Sejarah dan Pendidikan sejarah duduk rapat di Aula C7 FISIP. Sebagian sibuk mencatat, sebagian lain menatap ke arah Prof. Bambang Purwanto, sejarawan Universitas Gadjah Mada .


Penulis buku Gagalnya Historiografi Indonesia, ini menyodorkan pertanyaan yang kerap menghantui mahasiswa sejarah.” apakah sejarah masih relevan di era digital?,” ucapnya, Selasa, 23 September.


Bambang menyinggung gelombang pesimisme yang melanda disiplin ilmu sosial-humaniora, termasuk sejarah. Di tengah arus digitalisasi, bahkan dengan hadirnya kecerdasan buatan (AI), fungsi sejarah dianggap kian menyusut.


Belajar dan mengajar sejarah seakan berada di ujung jalan, ketika fungsi kemanfaatannya digantikan mesin dan algoritma yang diyakini lebih logis, sistematis, dan efisien. “Tapi jangan lupa, mesin tidak punya rasa. AI tak punya hati nurani. Itu keunggulan manusia.” kata Bambang.


Keresahan serupa pernah diingatkan sejarawan dunia Eric Hobsbawm. Menurutnya, sejarah sering dijadikan candu ideologi, bahan baku bagi nasionalisme dan ekstremisme. Tetapi, di sisi lain, sejarah juga bisa menjadi jalan menuju pemikiran kritis dan nilai-nilai demokratis.


Di hadapan mahasiswa baru, Bambang mengakui persoalan klasik yang tak pernah selesai: apa pentingnya sejarah dalam kehidupan sehari-hari?Jawabannya, menurut dia, ada pada kompetensi yang ditawarkan ilmu sejarah: mulai dari tanggung jawab moral (responsible competence), keterampilan hidup (living competence), kreativitas, kemampuan sipil, hingga berpikir kritis. “Ilmu, keterampilan, dan karakter terintegrasi di sana,” ujarnya.


Sejarah, lanjutnya, bukan sekadar kumpulan fakta. Reinhart Koselleck pernah mengingatkan bahwa masa lalu adalah narasi yang dibangun melalui lensa harapan masa kini tentang masa depan. Dengan pendekatan interdisiplin, sejarah mampu merajut relasi antara pengalaman masa lalu, kebutuhan kekinian, dan bayangan masa depan.


Bagi Salman Alfarisi, mahasiswa baru Ilmu , forum ini justru menguatkan keyakinannya. “Dari dulu saya suka sejarah. Keraguan tentang relevansi sejarah jadi hilang setelah mendengar penjelasan dari narasumber,” katanya.


Prof. Arif Purnomo, Dekan FISIP, mendorong mahasiswa baru untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dalam ilmu yang mereka pelajari. “Semoga ini jadi penanda awal kiprah Anda. Kompetisi akademik dan non-akademik menanti,” Jelasnya.


Di luar aula, realitas memang ironis. Profesi bagi sarjana sejarah di sektor formal selain guru, pustakawan, dan arsiparis sangat terbatas. Banyak institusi pemerintah maupun swasta hampir tak pernah membuka formasi khusus bagi sejarawan.


Tetapi, di sisi lain, substansi sejarah justru marak dipakai dalam industri kreatif, jurnalistik, hingga media digital. Hanya saja, produk sejarah yang beredar sering bukan karya sejarawan, melainkan orang-orang dari disiplin lain.

Dalam kuliah umum itu juga diluncurkan kegiatan tahunan yang diselenggarakan Himpunan Mahahsiswa Sejarah yaitu Bulan Pahlawan. Acara yang diselenggarakan dalam memperingatih hari pahlawan itu akan mengadakan berbagai macam lomba untuk tingkat anak sekolah dan umum.
