Olah Sampah Plastik, Mahasiswa FT Hasilkan Bahan Bakar Alternatif

T iga mahasiswa Fakultas Teknik (FT) Universitas Negeri Semarang merintis penelitian untuk mengubah sampah plastik menjadi bahan bakar alternatif. Gagasan ini muncul karena plastik telah menjadi masalah lingkungan global. Plastik adalah salah satu bahan kimia yang paling sulit diuraikan sehingga berpotensi terus terakumulasi.

Atas masalah itu, Hendra Prasetyo, Rudhiyanto, dan Ilham Eka Fitriyanto berpendapat, perlu cara pengolahan limbah plastik secara lebih aman. Pemusnahan plastik dengan dibakar, menurut mereka kurang efektif dan beresiko sebab dengan pembakaran munculnya polutan dari emisi gas buang CO2, CO, NOx, dan Sox.

Ketiganya melihat potensi minyak pada sampah plastik karena plastik dibuat dari bahan Polietilen. Dengan kandungan senyawa tersebut, plastik dapat diolah menjadi beberapa jenis bahan bakar.

“Setiap satuan berat plastik dapat menghasilkan 70% minyak, 16% gas, 6% karbon solid, dan 8% air,” kata Hendra Prasetyo, ketua tim peneliti.

Dari riset awal yang telah dilakukannya, 1 kilogram plastik botol air mineral dapat menghasilkan 0,5 liter pada suhu 300 derajat celcius selama 30 menit. Adapun 1 kilogram plastik kresek, jika diolah dapat menghasilkan 0,5 liter minyak pada suhu 200 derajat celsius selama 25 menit.

“Riset kami memang belum sampai pada proses penyulingan untuk mengetahui jenis minyak yang kami hasilkan, apakah bensin, minyak tanah, atau solar. Ini perlukan riset lanjutan yang lebih serius,” kata Hendra.
