Seorang English Language Fellow Siap Mengabdi di Unnes

Erica Jewel Balazs, seorang English Language Fellow yang diperbantukan dari Regional English Language Office (RELO) Kedutaan Besar Amerika Serikat, telah aktif mengajar di Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Negeri Semarang (FBS Unnes), mulai awal tahun ajaran 2013/2014 ini.

Menurut Ketua Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Dr Issy Yuliasri, selain mengajar beberapa mata kuliah, Erica juga membantu membimbing kegiatan mahasiswa, seperti English Conversation Club (ECC) dan English Writing Club (EWC).

“Kegiatan ECC diarahkan untuk membantu mahasiswa menguasai percakapan umum yang dilanjutkan dengan kegiatan speaking yang mengarah pada IELTS. Demikian juga kegiatan EWC diarahkan untuk membantu mahasiswa agar menguasai keterampilan menulis secara umum dalam bahasa Inggris yang dilanjutkan dengan tulisan akademik dan mengarah pada IELTS writing,” ujar Dr Issy, Jumat (20/9), di kampus Sekaran.

Selain itu, kata Dr Issy, Erica juga membantu mahasiswa yang terpilih dalam program IAS (International Academic Supervision) dalam mentoring utuk IELTS dan persiapan studi luar negeri. Mentoring IELTS juga diberikan kepada dosen-dosen Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris yang diprogramkan untuk menyiapkan para dosen di jurusan itu agar nantinya dapat menjadi pelatih atau instruktur persiapan IELTS bagi dosen-dosen jurusan lain.

“Untuk program terakhir ini dibutuhkan perencanaan dan pelaksanaan yang cukup lama, sehingga kami berharap agar Erica di Unnes bisa membantu hingga dua tahun,” katanya.

Selain bantuan di atas, keberadaan Erica juga dimaksudkan untuk memberikan capacity building, terutama untuk para dosen muda, sehingga dijadwalkan program roundtable discussion satu kali setiap dua bulan untuk membahas tren terkini pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.

“Erica juga membantu dalam seminar internasional serta workshop bagi guru yang menjadi agenda rutin di Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris,” ungkapnya.

Direncanakan, akan ada sesi pelatihan IELTS setiap minggu bagi dosen-dosen Unnes yang dalam waktu dekat berencana studi lanjut ke luar negeri. Perihal ini, Jurusan Bahasa Inggris bakal melakukan koordinasi dengan International Office Unnes.

Erica juga akan membantu membuka akses dan memberikan mentoring bagi dosen dan mahasiswa Unnes untuk mendapat kesempatan aplikasi program-program studi, kursus, dan pertukaran ke Amerika yang disponsori oleh pemerintah Amerika Serikat.
