Prof St Budi Waluya: Dosen Jangan Hanya Mikir Pangkat

Dosen hendaknya tidak melakukan penelitian sebatas untuk kenaikan pangkat, namun dengan banyaknya penelitian yang dilakukan maka pangkat akan dinaikkan.

Hal tersebut dikemukakan Prof St Budi Waluya dalam pidato pengukuhan guru besarnya, Kamis (1/12) di auditorium kampus Sekaran. Pada acara dihadiri segenap anggota senat, Dekan, dan pejabat di lingkungan Unnes tersebut, Budi Waluya menyampaikan pidato ilmiah “Kontribusi Matematika dalam Pengembangan Ilmu dan Teknologi”.

Persamaan diferensial memegang peranan penting dalam bidang rekayasa, fisika, ilmu ekonomi, ekologi, dan berbagai macam disiplin ilmu lain. “Melalui penggunaan simbol-simbol dalam persamaan diferensial ini, hubungan antar variabel yang masih kurang jelas akan semakin mudah dipahami,” kata dosen Jurusan Matematika FMIPA Unnes itu.

Sebagai contoh, persamaan diferensial telah diterapkan dalam bidang, antara lain penghitungan pertumbuhan populasi, suspensi kabel jembatan, vibrasi kabel, dan penerapan pada ilmu geografi.

Pada akhir pidatonya, dia berharap perguruan tinggi yang berkualitas tidak hanya menghasilkan sarjana yang cerdas dan berdaya saing, namun juga berkontribusi pada peningkatan kesejahteraan bangsa melalui pengetahuan dan budaya.

Dalam sambutannya, Rektor Unnes Prof Sudijono Sastroatmodjo mengemukakan bahwa para leluhur kita juga telah menggunakan ilmu matematika dalam kesehariannya. “Leluhur kita sering menggunakan tradisi petung dalam mengambil keputusan penting. Tradisi ini pun sebagian mengandalkan matematika. Dalam agama, Tuhan juga diperkenalkan sebagai sosok Yang Maha Menghitung amal dan perbuatan hamba-Nya,” paparnya.

Sudijono menambahkan, matematika merupakan bidang ilmu pengetahuan penting. Namun kenyataan sampai saat ini, prestasi belajar matematika generasi muda kita belumlah menggembirakan. Memang terdapat sejumlah siswa yang mendapatkan penghargaan internasional di bidang ini, tetapi jumlah mereka terlampau sedikit dibanding jumlah keseluruhan siswa sekolah dan generasi muda Indonesia pada umumnya.

“Oleh karena itu, dengan kehadiran guru besar baru di bidang matematika kita berharap Unnes dapat meningkatkan kontribusi bagi perbaikan capaian belajar matematika para siswa,” harapnya.
