PEER Science is a partnership between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) that is designed to address development challenges through international research collaboration. This competitive grants program allows scientists in Indonesia to apply for funds to support research and capacity-building activities in partnership with their NSF-funded collaborators on topics of importance to USAID/Indonesia. Research areas include but are not limited to:
- Food security topics such as agricultural development, fisheries, and plant genomics
- Climate change impacts such as water sustainability, hydrology, ocean acidification, climate process and modeling, and environmental engineering
- Other development topics including disaster mitigation, biodiversity, water, and renewable energy
USAID/Indonesia has dedicated funding for Indonesian research projects. This means that a relatively large number of awards will be made in Indonesia. Examples of previously awarded Indonesian projects include:
Universitas Gunadarma and Harvard University: Citizen science solutions for national biodiversity data needs: developing a plant checklist for West Kalimantan, Indonesia
Universitas Udayana and University of California, Los Angeles: Connecting Science and Management through Biodiversity Research and Collaboration
Indonesian Institute of Sciences and University of Maryland – College Park: Tree Isotope Records of Past Rainfall Variability in the Indonesian Maritime Region
Universitas Indonesia and University of California, Santa Cruz: Transforming Undergraduate STEM Experiences Through The Next Generation of Scientists and Engineer Educators
