Kunjungi UNNES, Prof George Quinn Beri Kuliah Umum Citra Perdesaan dalam Novel-novel Jawa

Dosen Australian National University (ANU), Australia, Prof Dr George Quinn, memberikan kuliah umum di Kampung Budaya Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Kamis (17 April 2025). Kuliah yang dihadiri ratusan mahasiswa dari Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Jawa serta Prodi Sastra Jawa ini mengusung tema “Karang Padhusunan dalam Sastra Jawa Modern”.

Menurut George Quinn, citra perdesaan dalam novel-novel Jawa mutakhir sangat beragam. Di satu sisi, desa adalah sebuah latar tempat yang menjadi tempat kelahiran, yang dalam konteks itu kerap mengusung romantisisme dengan pelbagai kondisi alam dan situasi sosialnya.

Namun di sisi lain, desa juga acap ditinggalkan. Karena itu, beberapa novel mengisahkan desa sebagai tempat yang dituju untuk mudik atau pulang kampung ketika Idulfitri, namun alur penceritaan sudah sepenuhnya berpusat pada perkotaan.

Wakil Dekan II FBS UNNES, Dr Muhamad Burhanudin, mengatakan kuliah umum bertujuan memberikan perspektif baru kepada para mahasiswa. Pengetahuan yang diberikan oleh para dosen dan pakar akan semakin memperkuat pemahaman dan bekal dalam menempuh studi selama di kampus. Di sisi lain, Burhan berharap para mahasiswa memetik inspirasi dari narasumber.

“Pak George Quinn yang bukan orang Jawa saja sangat memahami dan mendalami kebudayaan kita. Ini menjadi pemantik bagi para mahasiswa untuk terus giat dalam belajar,” ujar Burhan dalam bahasa Jawa.

Kuliah umum dimoderatori oleh Dr Sucipto Hadi Purnomo, dosen FBS UNNES.

Dukungan terhadap SDGs poin 4 dan poin 17 diwujudkan melalui penyelenggaraan kuliah umum yang menghadirkan narasumber atau pakar internasional. Kegiatan ini memperkaya proses pembelajaran dengan perspektif global, mendorong pertukaran ilmu lintas negara, serta memperluas wawasan mahasiswa terhadap isu-isu dan perkembangan terkini di tingkat internasional.

Dalam kunjungannya ke Indonesia, George Quinn juga menghadiri beberapa kegiatan lain. Sebelum kuliah umum dimulai, ia menghibahkan sejumlah buku kepada prodi dan melakukan penandatanganan kerja sama untuk pendidikan dan penelitian
