Cerita Dosen UNNES Populerkan Bahasa Indonesia di Amerika: Mengajar di Yale University

Kontribusi dosen Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) dalam pengembangan ilmu pengetahuan secara internasional semakin luas. Hal itu dibuktikan dengan semakin banyaknya dosen UNNES yang terlibat dalam kegiatan akademik internasional di berbagai perguruan tinggi top dunia.

Salah satunya dilakukan oleh dosen Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni (FBS), Dr. Wati Istanti, M.Pd.

Pengajar Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing (BIPA) ini mengajar sebagai dosen tamu di Yale University, New Haven, Amerika Serikat, 8-15 Oktober 2023. Yale University merupakan universitas terbaik ke-18 di dunia dalam pencapaian QS 100 WCU. 

Melalui kerja sama dengan Consortium for the Indonesian Teaching (COTI), Wati mengenalkan bahasa dan budaya Indonesia yang dikaitkan dengan bidang kuliner.

Hal tersebut dilakukan sebagai implementasi kolaborasi dua penelitiannya dengan judul “Pengembangan Kamus Digital BIPA Bermuatan Kuliner Jawa Tengah sebagai Pengenalan Budaya Pangan Lokal bagi Mahasiswa Amerika” dan “Pemetaan Karakteristik Pemelajar BIPA Berdasarkan Latar Belakang Akademik dan Budaya di Benua Amerika”.

Di bawah Dewan Southeast Asia Studies, Yale University, kegiatan ini mendapatkan respon positif dari mahasiswa dan pimpinan perguruan tinggi tersebut.

Menurut Wati, kegiatan ini penting secara keilmuan dan diharapkan dapat memberi kontribusi positif dalam diplomasi budaya Indonesia di kancah internasional. “Kegiatan ini bisa jadi jadi salah satu bentuk pelaksanaan amanat Undang-Undang Nomor 24 tahun 2009 khususnya dalam peningkatan status bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa Internasional,” katanya.

Kegiatan Wati di Yale University diapresiasi oleh mahasiswa di sana. Karina Herrera dan Tate Evans, dua mahasiswa yang mengikuti kelas BIPA mengapresiasi bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa yang unik. Mereka senang bisa belajar bahasa Indonesia dan ingin ke Indonesia untuk mencoba makanan di Indonesia.

President COTI, ndriyo Sukmono, Ph.D menyampaikan agar kolaborasi penelitian tetap terjalin untuk makin mengenalkan bahasa Indonesia ke seluruh mahasiswa Amerika.

Sementara itu, Dr. Tommi Yuniawan, M.Hum. selaku Dekan FBS UNNES sangat mendukung dengan kegiatan positif yang dilakukan oleh para dosen di lingkungan.

Selain dapat digunakan untuk pencapaian IKU, program seperti ini akan dapat meningkatkan jalinan kerja sama antara satu lembaga yang ada di Indonesia dengan di luar negeri. Hal tersebut juga akan meningkatkan reputasi UNNES untuk menyelenggarakan pendidikan yang cemerlang dan bereputasi dunia.
