Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) demonstrates a strong institutional commitment to sustainability and climate action through a comprehensive set of rector regulations and official policies. As a conservation-oriented university, UNNES integrates environmental responsibility into its governance, academic activities, and campus operations.
One of the key policy frameworks is the Rector Regulation No. 127 of 2024 on Green Campus Management, which establishes guidelines for developing an environmentally friendly campus . This regulation emphasizes sustainable campus planning, including green infrastructure, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, water conservation, and waste management systems. It reflects UNNES’ vision to create a clean, safe, comfortable, and sustainable academic environment.
In alignment with global climate commitments, UNNES has also issued the Rector Decree on Carbon Neutrality (No. B/3669/UN37/HK.02/2024), which outlines the university’s target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 . This policy reinforces the university’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through strategies such as energy transition, waste reduction, and sustainable resource management.
To operationalize sustainability across campus, UNNES implements several supporting policies, including:
- Green Campus Management Policy (No. 126/2024) focusing on clean, healthy, and environmentally sustainable campus operations.
- Water Conservation Governance Policy (No. 109/2024) ensuring efficient and sustainable use of water resources.
- Single-Use Plastic Reduction Policy (No. 125/2024) aimed at minimizing plastic waste and promoting reusable alternatives.
- Waste Management and Recycling Policy, encouraging waste segregation, reduction, reuse, and recycling practices across the campus community.
- Hazardous Waste (B3) Management Policy, regulating safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Environmental Protection Policy, addressing prevention of pollution in both land and water ecosystems.
Furthermore, UNNES promotes biodiversity conservation through the Policy on Invasive Alien Species Control (No. 113/2024), ensuring ecosystem balance within the campus environment . These policies collectively demonstrate that sustainability at UNNES is not a single initiative, but a systemic and integrated approach embedded in institutional governance.
Through these comprehensive policies, UNNES ensures that sustainability principles are implemented in education, research, community engagement, and daily campus operations. This holistic approach strengthens UNNES’ position as a leading conservation university committed to environmental stewardship and global climate action.
