Demonstrating its strong commitment to employee welfare, health, and sustainability, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) ensures that all academic and non-academic staff have access to nutritious, affordable, and sustainable food options. These programs are part of UNNES’s ongoing efforts to promote food security, prevent hunger, and support well-being within the university community. UNNES mandates all campus canteens to follow the Healthy Canteen Policy, ensuring menus that are balanced, hygienically prepared, and affordable. Common healthy menu items include nasi pecel (rice with steamed vegetables and peanut sauce), gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut dressing), sayur bayam (spinach soup), tumis kangkung (stir-fried water spinach), capcay (mixed vegetables), and tofu-tempe dishes as plant-based proteins. Prices range from IDR 9,000–15,000 (USD 0.55–0.90) per portion, making nutritious meals accessible for all. To further support its employees, UNNES provides a daily meal allowance of around IDR 37,000 (USD 2.25) for staff, helping them meet their nutritional needs conveniently and affordably on campus.

Every Friday morning, UNNES organizes routine exercise sessions for staff as part of its health promotion program. After the activity, the university provides free healthy breakfasts such as mung bean porridge (bubur kacang hijau), chicken porridge (bubur ayam), gado-gado, or fresh fruit and vegetable juice. This initiative aims to improve staff nutrition and energy levels while encouraging healthy lifestyle habits across the university. UNNES also runs several community-based food initiatives, including the “Jumat Berkah” (Blessed Friday) program, distributing around 2,000 meal portions weekly, with approximately 300 meals reserved for staff. During Eid al-Adha, the university distributes 2,000 qurban meat packages to employees and surrounding communities, ensuring fair access to protein-rich foods.

Through these integrated initiatives — from daily meal subsidies and healthy breakfasts to food sharing and sustainable canteen policies — UNNES ensures that every staff member can access healthy, affordable, and eco-friendly food options, fostering a culture of well-being, solidarity, and sustainability throughout the campus.
