In response to the concerns of working mothers in fulfilling their responsibility to exclusively breastfeed their children, a conservation group consisting of Rudi Salam and Nining Wahyuningsih, under the guidance of Prof. Arif Purnomo, Dean of FISIP, took the initiative to establish a breastfeeding room, also known as a lactation room or breastfeeding corner. This important facility for breastfeeding mothers was officially inaugurated with a symbolic tumpeng cutting ceremony led by the Dean of FISIP, followed by a joint prayer on Friday (August 15) at the FISIP Dean’s Office, 1st Floor, Sekaran Campus.
Sharing her experience as a “breastfeeding warrior,” Nining Wahyuningsih highlighted the importance of a breastfeeding room in the workplace as part of fulfilling mothers’ rights. She emphasized that a breastfeeding room is a means to guarantee the rights of working mothers to nurse their children and provide exclusive breast milk.
In line with Nining, Rudi Salam, as Head of the Conservation Cluster, stated that the breastfeeding room can be linked to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). The facility contributes to the health of mothers and children, supports gender equality in the workplace and public spaces, and is also relevant to SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) as it ensures equal facilities for all mothers.
Prof. Arif, as Dean of FISIP, consistently supports the establishment of breastfeeding rooms as an important facility to achieve multiple SDGs, especially in the areas of health, gender equality, and reducing inequalities. “By providing adequate and comfortable facilities, we can support the health of both mothers and children, while creating a more inclusive environment for everyone,” he stated, citing various sources.
