Semi Sukarni wanita kelahiran Kaliboto Wetan Purworejo 47 tahun yang lalu, senin  8/1 berhasil mempertahankan desertasinya dalam ujian terbuka di gedung B 401. Doktor ke 309 lulusan UNNES dan 55 dari Program Studi Ilmu Pendidikan Bahasa S3 UNNES ini mengambil judul The effectiveness of strategy-based reading instruction and reciprocal teaching viewed from students selft-efficacy. Semi memaparkan bahwa dalam studi reading instructions diperlukan Pengajaran timbal balik  dengan Strategy-based Reading Instruction and Reciprocal Teaching (SBRI and RT). Semi menyatakan bahwa kunci keberhasilan pembelajaran reading secara komprehensip tidak hanya diukur dari keberhasilan siswa yang tinggi namun juga diukur dari siswa yang mempunyai tingkat keberhasilan rendah juga.

Ujian yang diketuai oleh Prof. Dr H Achmad Slamet, M.Si, Sekretaris Prof. Dr. Januarius Mujiyanto, M.Hum. dengan dewan penguji, 1) Prof. Dr. Suwandi, M.Pd, 2) Prof. Dr. rer nat. Wahyu Hardyanto, M.Si. 3) Dr Rudi Hartono, M.Pd. 4) Prof. Dr. Dwi Rukmini, M.Pd. Dewan penguji menyatakan lulus dengan Sangat memuaskan.

Hasil paparan penelitian Semi dari 2 variabel yang diteliti dengan kelas pertama dengan model Strategy-based Reading Instruction (SBRI) dan kelas lain menggunakan model Reciprocal Teaching (RT). Kelas yang menggunakan Model SBRI cukup signifikan memiliki kecakapan dalam memahami reading. Sedangkan kelas yang menggunakan model Reciprocal Teaching (RT) tidak sebaik hasil kecakapannya dalam reading dibanding menggunakan (SBRI)

Pembaharuan yang dipromosikan oleh Doktor Semi Sukarni dalam akhir paparannya menyampaikan bahwa setiap pendidik harus memberikan strategi dalam penyampaian materi reading  terutama menggunakan model  Strategy-based Reading Instruction (SBRI).  Pendidik perlu selalu mengembangkan tingkat pemahaman diri kepada siswa terhadap kemampuan reading siswanya
