The event commenced with a field orientation at the reservoir site, followed by a presentation by representatives from the River Basin Authority, which oversees the dam’s operations.

During the presentation session, participants gained in-depth insights into the history, functions, and strategic role of the Jatibarang Dam, which has been operational since 2015. Constructed over four years, the dam is currently classified as a National Vital Object, serving primarily as a clean water reserve, hydroelectric power source, and flood control mechanism for the city of Semarang.

With a capacity of 20.4 million cubic meters, the dam significantly reduces urban flood risk by up to one third and supplies clean water for the primary needs of Semarang’s regional water utility (PDAM). The reservoir receives inflow from three major rivers: Kali Kripik, Kali Kreo, and Kali Garang.

This initiative represents a tangible contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by educating the younger generation from both countries on the importance of water conservation and disaster management technologies based on natural resource systems.

The study also strengthens international collaboration while fostering global environmental awareness. As part of UNNES’s vision as a conservation-oriented university, the activity underscores the institution’s academic commitment to inclusive, equitable, and sustainable development.

source: https://unnes.ac.id/studi-penggunaan-air-berkelanjutan-geografi-unnes-dan-ntnu-taiwan-kunjungi-waduk-jatibarang/

In an effort to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable water resource management, the Geography Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), in collaboration with National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), conducted a Sustainable Water Use Study at the Jatibarang Reservoir in Semarang on Thursday 6/12/2025.
