UNNES Students Conduct Educational Visit to Integrated Waste Processing Site to Strengthen Learning on Sustainable Waste Management and SDGs Implementation

Semarang, June 13, 2025 — Students from the Environmental Science and Science Education Study Programs at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) carried out an educational visit to the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) of UNNES. This activity was part of the Waste Management course, which is primarily offered to Environmental Science students but also joined by Science Education students through the Internal Student Exchange program under MBKM (Freedom to Learn – Independent Campus).

The field activity was directly supervised by course lecturers Mr. Trida Ridho Fariz, M.Sc and Mr. Amnan Haris, M.Ling, along with staff from the UNNES Sub-directorate of Conservation. During the visit, students engaged in experiential learning about campus waste management systems that emphasize zero waste principles and circular economy approaches.

Students observed various waste processing activities, including the composting of leaf litter, maggot cultivation as decomposers, sorting of organic and inorganic waste, utilization of fly ash and bottom ash (FABA), and leachate water recycling. All of these processes are designed to eliminate waste disposal to landfills and to maximize the reuse of resources.

This activity not only supports competence-based learning outcomes and practical understanding of waste management, but also aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action. Through this activity, UNNES reinforces its role as a conservation campus while nurturing students as agents of change in advancing sustainable development.
