Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has once again demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by hosting a Guest Lecture featuring Dr. Olga Cam, a lecturer from Sheffield University. Held on Thursday (January 30), the event focused on the topic “Business and Accounting Education, Sustainability Accounting (Developing Metrics and Reporting Processes to Include ESGs for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses).”

This Guest Lecture aimed to introduce sustainability concepts in business and accounting education while emphasizing the importance of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects into accounting reporting for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Dr. Olga provided insights into developing sustainability metrics and reporting processes aligned with global standards while also addressing the challenges SMEs face in implementing ESG principles.

Participants, including students from the Master of Accounting program and the International Undergraduate Program (IUP) in Accounting at UNNES, had the opportunity to engage in direct discussions with Dr. Olga. These discussions further deepened their understanding of how sustainable accounting can be applied in an increasingly socially and environmentally responsible business landscape.

The event was opened by the Vice Dean for Business, Research, and Collaboration, Dr. Dorojatun Prihandono, S.E., M.M., Ph.D., who underscored the importance of equipping students with the competencies needed to navigate the complexities of the global business environment.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Prof. Dr. Amir Mahmud, S.Pd., M.Si., emphasized that such initiatives are part of the faculty’s strategy to enhance graduate quality—not only in academic excellence but also in fostering a strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.

“The Faculty of Economics and Business remains committed to inviting international speakers to broaden students’ perspectives, particularly in addressing the increasing demands for accountability and transparency in business practices,” stated Prof. Amir Mahmud.

Through this initiative, UNNES students are expected to be better prepared to apply sustainable accounting concepts in their professional careers while also becoming adaptable professionals who contribute to the development of socially and environmentally responsible businesses.
