Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), recognized as a Conservation University, continues to strengthen its commitment to protecting marine, freshwater, and coastal ecosystems through a series of collaborative, student-led, and institutionally supported programs. These initiatives combine education, research, and community service to promote sustainable stewardship and biodiversity protection.
Expanding Mangrove Planting Initiatives
UNNES has carried out extensive mangrove planting programs across Central Java and other regions, involving students, lecturers, and industry partners.

Students from the Environmental Science Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) once again carried out a mangrove planting activity titled “ILING PROJECT 2024: Mangrove On, Climate Change Gone”. The event took place along the Mangunharjo Coast, Semarang, as part of the commemoration of World Environment Day.
The activity was attended by around 100 students, not only from UNNES but also from the Environmental Science Study Program of Ivet University Semarang. The event also received strong support from various partners, including PT Djarum Indonesia, which contributed to the provision of 1,500 mangrove seedlings. The seedlings were supplied by the Mangrove Lestari Farmer Group, led by Mr. Sururi, who, together with his team, also guided the participants through the planting process.
We have also carried out several collaborative activities with our partners;
- The Faculty of Engineering (FT) organized mangrove planting at Tirang Beach, engaging students from various disciplines in coastal restoration efforts.
- The Chemical Engineering Student Association (HMPTK) initiated a Mangrove Replant Program at Tambakrejo Beach, involving local youth in environmental action.
- The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) held a mangrove planting and beach clean-up campaign to reinforce UNNES’s conservation vision.
- In collaboration with PT Kawasan Industri Wijaya Kusuma (KIW) and the Iling Project, UNNES planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings to help protect Semarang’s coastline.
- The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) planted 7,000 mangrove seedlings in Mangunharjo, supported by PT Pamapersada Nusantara and community-based environmental groups.
- The MAHAPALA UNNES organization extended conservation efforts to Karimunjawa Island, combining mangrove planting with its Layar Biru Expedition focused on marine preservation.
- In partnership with National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), UNNES conducted a joint mangrove planting activity in Semarang, showcasing the importance of international cooperation in local environmental management.
Collaboration on Mangrove Seedling Programs

UNNES also collaborates with PGN Saka to distribute and plant 5000 mangrove seedlings in Semarang and Pati, supporting ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and protect coastal ecosystems. The event involved around 150 participants from various community groups and educational institutions, including KKMD Central Java, BPDAS Pemali Juwana, DLH Pati, Yayasan Akar Banir Indonesia, and several local schools and youth organizations.
