Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has reaffirmed its dedication to environmental sustainability by issuing an official circular on the Reduction of Single-Use Plastic Usage within the UNNES Environment. This initiative is aligned with the university’s vision as a Conservation University and supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
The circular, numbered B/28525/UN37/PA.00.00/2024, emphasizes UNNES’s continuous efforts to minimize plastic waste generation and promote eco-friendly behavior among all academic and non-academic members of the university. It was officially signed by Prof. Heri Yanto, M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Planning, General Affairs, Human Resources, and Finance, on behalf of the Rector.
The policy encourages the entire UNNES community—including students, lecturers, and staff—to actively reduce single-use plastic consumption through the following actions:
- Properly segregating waste into organic and inorganic categories at designated collection points within the campus.
- Engaging conservation units to provide continuous education and campaigns to raise awareness of the environmental impact of plastic waste, particularly single-use bottles.
- Promoting sustainable purchasing by prioritizing eco-friendly and reusable products for campus operations and events.
This circular also aligns with national regulations, including Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management and Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021, reinforcing UNNES’s role as a model for green and sustainable campuses in Indonesia.
Through this initiative, UNNES continues to uphold its commitment to embedding the Spirit of Conservation across all aspects of campus life, creating a learning environment that not only supports academic excellence but also nurtures environmental responsibility.
