Students from the Javanese Language and Literature Education Program and the Javanese Literature Program at the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), organized the “UNNES Mantu” event as part of their Pranatacara (Master of Ceremony) course exam. Held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the UNNES Cultural Village in Sekaran, Gunungpati, Semarang City, the event served as a simulation of a traditional Javanese wedding ceremony.
“UNNES Mantu” is a hands-on application designed to test students’ skills in conducting Javanese ceremonial protocols as a pranatacara, or master of ceremony. This event allows students to apply theoretical knowledge from the classroom in a real-world setting, while also promoting the preservation and revitalization of Javanese cultural values.
The event at UNNES Cultural Village was supervised by course instructors Dr. Widodo, M.Hum., and Didik Supriadi, M.Pd., and attended by the Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Languages and Arts, Muhamad Burhanudin, M.A., the Coordinator of the Javanese Language and Literature Education Program, Mujimin, M.Pd., and the Coordinator of the Javanese Literature Program, Dr. Prembayun Miji Lestari.
According to Burhanudin, this event offers invaluable experience to students by allowing them to directly practice the customs and etiquette of a Javanese wedding. Students are tested not only on their proficiency in the Javanese language and public speaking skills but also on their understanding and application of traditional Javanese ceremonial practices.
The event also aims to foster students’ appreciation for Javanese culture. In line with UNNES’s mission as a university committed to cultural conservation, the Faculty of Languages and Arts encourages students to uphold this cultural heritage in society. “In this way, they can respect, preserve, and carry forward these traditions, preparing them to act as cultural ambassadors within their communities,” he stated.
