UNNES and PT KIW Partner to Restore Coastal Ecosystems Through Mangrove Planting

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), a leading Conservation University, has reinforced its commitment to marine and freshwater conservation by working directly with industry to implement practices that minimize damage to aquatic ecosystems. In collaboration with PT Kawasan Industri Wijayakusuma (KIW), a state-owned enterprise specializing in industrial estate development and management since 1988, UNNES launched the Iling Project , a joint initiative focused on coastal ecosystem restoration (KIW–UNNES Mangrove Planting Collaboration)

The project involved the planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings along the Semarang coastline, a strategic effort to mitigate the impacts of coastal abrasion, restore marine biodiversity, and promote sustainable shoreline management. Mangroves serve as natural barriers against erosion, while also enhancing habitat quality for aquatic and coastal species, making them vital to ecosystem resilience.z

This collaboration exemplifies how universities and industry can co-develop nature-based solutions to environmental challenges. By combining academic research, student involvement, and corporate social responsibility, UNNES and PT KIW have created a model for sustainable partnerships that protect marine environments while engaging communities in conservation.

Beyond mangrove planting, UNNES researchers continue to explore innovative approaches to water and ecosystem management, including projects that anticipate drought threats and develop clean water solutions (UNNES Research on Water Conservation). These initiatives highlight UNNES’s integrated approach to conservation, blending science, education, and industry collaboration.
