Yogyakarta, Indonesia — As part of an experiential learning process, 133 students from the Social Studies Education Study Program of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Political Science (FISIP), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), along with five supervising lecturers, carried out the Kegiatan Field Study (KFS Berdampak) from October 13–15, 2025, across five locations in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The five supervising lecturers included Noviani Achmad Putri (Anthropology Studies), Aisya Nur Sayidatun Nisa (Economics Studies), Sanita Carolina Sasea (Sociology Studies), Asep Ginanjar (Geography Studies), and Yadi Suryafi (History Studies). The field study activities took place in Wukirsari Village, Kasongan Village, Prambanan, Tebing Breksi, and the Yogyakarta Palace (Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat) for the sociology focus.
Under the theme “KFS Berdampak: Exploring the Socio-Cultural, Economic, and Environmental Dimensions of Yogyakarta Communities to Strengthen the Graduate Profile of Social Studies Education,” the field study served as an opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world contexts. Students not only conducted observations but also engaged directly with local communities through interviews, participatory learning, and hands-on cultural training activities such as puppet coloring workshops, ceramic making, cultural preservation, and community education programs.
Supervising lecturer Noviani Achmad Putri, S.Pd., M.Pd. explained that the field study allows students to experience real community life, making their learning process more contextual and meaningful. The Head of the Study Program, Dr. Moh. Sholeh, M.Pd., emphasized that students should maintain health and safety during the field activities while maximizing the opportunity to gain valuable experience.
“This program aims to enhance the academic quality of our study program and provide meaningful, real-world experiences that will shape competent, socially aware, and responsible educators,” he stated.
Local residents warmly welcomed the students’ presence. For them, this program brought a refreshing spirit of exchange and collaboration. Mr. Abi, a local puppet craftsman from Wukirsari Village, expressed appreciation for the students’ enthusiasm in learning about history and culture, noting that “in an era when many young people are more interested in foreign cultures, it is inspiring to see students eager to learn and preserve local heritage.”
The KFS Berdampak program concluded with a final session on sociology held at the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, hosted at Kagungan Dalem Sasana Hinggil Dwi Abad, Alun-Alun Kidul, with KRT Kusumonegoro serving as the guest speaker.
This KFS Berdampak initiative contributes significantly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): through the integration of contextual, experiential learning that enhances the pedagogical and professional competencies of future educators.
- SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): by promoting local cultural preservation, community engagement, and awareness of environmental sustainability.
- SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): through active collaboration between students, lecturers, and local communities in fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
Through this initiative, UNNES continues to strengthen its commitment to producing educators who are globally aware yet locally rooted—educators who can integrate social, cultural, economic, and environmental perspectives into sustainable education practices.
