UNNES Psychology – Psychology students at the Universitas Negeri Semarang had the opportunity to broaden their knowledge through a public lecture webinar entitled “Experiences, Challenges, and Opportunities in Treating Clients with Clinical Disorders.” This activity is organized to facilitate broader learning for students in the Clinical Psychology course.
This webinar features two speakers who are experts in their fields, namely Dr. Jiemi Ardian, Sp. K. J., a psychiatrist from Siloam Hospital Bogor, and Chloe Larue, a Clinical Psychologist from Paris. In addition, Kannitha Atalla Shedhe will also be present as the moderator who will accompany the event. The event was held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM WIB online via the Zoom Meeting platform. Psychology students from UNNES also attended and actively participated in both the presentation and discussion sessions.
Each speaker gave an interesting presentation on human psychology. Dr. Jiemi, a psychiatrist, shared his views on clinical disorders from a psychiatric perspective. The psychiatric perspective views clinical disorders not from the perspective of social interactions and human background, but rather from the symptoms and problems that occur in the brain. He introduced a theory about how the brain receives and processes various stimuli, one of which is trauma intervention.
“Actually, our memories can change due to the influence of other people. From this, the intervention that can be done is to manipulate or edit problematic memories,” said Dr. Jiemi in his presentation.
Meanwhile, Chloe Larue shared her experience as a psychologist who focuses on treating children with special needs. She introduced Picture Change Communication as one of the approaches used to communicate with children with special needs to avoid feelings of difficulty and frustration. In addition, a Behavioral Functional Analysis approach is needed to understand the reasons behind a child’s bad behavior, which is then directed towards behavior that is more acceptable to society.
The material presented emphasizes the importance of an empathetic and structured approach in understanding and dealing with the behavior of children with special needs. With the right approach, Chloe shows that communication and understanding can be the first steps toward practical assistance.
One of the webinar participants gave a positive impression, “It was exciting because I was able to explore things that I previously only knew the basics about. Both speakers made me even more interested in delving into clinical work. Dr. Jiemi shared knowledge about trauma and how our memory works, while Chloe talked about how to handle children with autism according to their needs.” Since I love children, this is interesting to learn so I can help meet their needs,” said Putriana Shanty Hapsari, a psychology student at UNNES.
This webinar is expected to foster students’ interest and enthusiasm for clinical psychology and provide new perspectives and insights so that students can learn to deepen their knowledge with an empathetic and scientific approach. This activity can be the first step in shaping and preparing future psychologists who are responsive, empathetic, and prepared to enter the world of work in the mental health field.
