Semarang, October 10, 2025 — As part of Universitas Negeri Semarang’s (UNNES) conservation vision, 1,255 new students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Political Science (FISIP) gathered at Kalisegoro Field, Gunungpati, for the annual Tree Planting Program, reaffirming the faculty’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
Dean of FISIP, Prof. Arif, emphasized that the activity reflects UNNES’s dedication as a conservation-minded university.
“Planting a tree may seem like a small act, but it brings a tremendous impact for humanity and the planet. This is part of our collective effort to preserve nature for the greater good,” he stated.
Before the activity began, students received instructions from Teguh Prihantono, representing the Sub-directorate of Conservation under the Directorate of Academic, Student Affairs, and Conservation UNNES.
“Each group consists of three students. The trees are planted in the prepared holes, polybags are removed, and every planting process is documented,” he explained.
Under the warm morning sun, the students spread across the Kalisegoro area, enthusiastically planting various tree seedlings. The event radiated a sense of togetherness as hundreds of students worked hand in hand to make the environment greener.
Muhammad Syahrul, a History student, expressed his happiness in contributing to nature.
“I planted a mango tree. I hope it grows well and benefits many people,” he said.
Fathira, a Communication Science student, shared a similar hope.
“I planted a palm tree. I wish it will grow beautifully and make this area greener,” she added.
In total, 410 tree seedlings were planted, consisting of several species including Salam (50), Tabebuya (50), Kawista (10), Talijiwo (50), Pulai (50), Mango (40), Longan (40), Sapodilla (40), Mangosteen (40), and Avocado (40).
Participants came from nine study programs under FISIP: Civic Education, Political Science, Communication Science, History Education, Geography Education, Geography, Sociology-Anthropology Education, Social Studies Education, and History.
This annual tree planting tradition serves as a practical learning experience for new students, instilling conservation values and environmental responsibility as part of FISIP UNNES’s identity.
Through this initiative, FISIP UNNES contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 15: Life on Land
- SDG 4: Quality Education
Tree planting not only helps reduce carbon emissions and support ecosystem balance but also acts as an educational medium for students to internalize conservation values and foster social responsibility toward environmental sustainability.
