In a significant initiative towards fostering sustainable aviation practices, Dr. Dorojatun Prihandono, a lecturer from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), conducted an academic visit to the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) at Punggol Campus, Singapore, from March 17 to 21, 2025.
During this visit, Dr. Dorojatun delivered lectures in two classes within the Aviation Management Study Programme: Airline Network and Fleet Planning and Aviation Environment. Each session was attended by approximately 50 undergraduate students and included prospective students visiting from Temasek Polytechnic.
A key highlight of his sessions was the presentation titled “Green Aviation Towards Sustainable Environment”, which emphasized the critical strategies for achieving sustainable development in the aviation sector. The material discussed the significant environmental impacts of aviation, including its contributions to global warming, air pollution, and ecosystem degradation. Dr. Dorojatun underscored the necessity for operational measures to minimize fuel consumption and promote efficiency.
Central to the presentation was the role of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a viable alternative to traditional jet fuel, adhering to environmental sustainability principles such as non-competition with food resources, non-contribution to deforestation, and the promotion of carbon recycling through biomass feedstock. The transition management approach, encompassing strategic, tactical, operational, and reflexive spheres, was introduced as a framework to guide airports and airlines in systematically achieving long-term sustainability goals.
The lectures further aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s strategic direction, which recognizes the importance of technological innovation, efficiency gains, carbon offsetting, and the exploration of new propulsion systems including hydrogen and electric solutions.
In addition to academic lectures, Dr. Dorojatun engaged in collaborative discussions with Assistant Professor Seck Tan, Head of the Air Transport Management Study Programme at SIT. These discussions explored potential joint research projects focusing on sustainable aviation management and environmental impact reduction strategies.
This academic engagement signifies FEB UNNES’s commitment to contributing actively to global academic discourse on sustainable aviation and strengthens international collaborations in advancing environmentally responsible air transport management practices.
