Enhancing Water Conservation through Measured Water Reuse at UNNES

In support of its vision as a Conservation University, UNNES actively promotes water efficiency through systematic monitoring and utilization of reused water across the entire campus. This initiative ensures that every drop of water contributes to sustainability, aligning with the university’s broader environmental goals.
Water reuse at UNNES is primarily measured through its extensive rainwater harvesting system, which operates in all faculties and several administrative units. The system has a total harvesting potential of 31,000 liters per full session, stored in 43 water tanks strategically distributed across campus. The collected rainwater is used 100% for various purposes such as garden irrigation, cleaning, and facility maintenance—reducing dependence on external water sources.
In addition, UNNES recycles ablution water from campus mosques, reusing an average of 14,870 liters per week for approximately 9,913 users. Through these integrated efforts, UNNES exemplifies how higher education institutions can lead in sustainable water conservation and responsible environmental management.
