Courage, The Ideal Character of Modern Kartini

Countless value systems have been constructed to subordinate women. To break free from and resist these value systems, contemporary women must possess the courage to speak out. This courage is not only necessary but also empowers women to dismantle the stereotypes that portray them as calm and silent.

This was one of the ideas presented by UNNES Sociology Professor Tri Marheeni, M.Hum, during a seminar commemorating Kartini Day at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) on Thursday (April 21). The lecturer of gender sociology urged the seminar participants, the majority of whom were women, to examine the value systems present in society critically.

She pointed out that several societal rules were created with a patriarchal spirit. For instance, the division of domestic and public roles is a social construction rooted in patriarchy.

To analyze these various constructions, she suggested distinguishing between gender and nature. “Gender is a social construction, while nature is an inherent quality bestowed by God,” she stated.
