Children from PAUD Sekar Nagari UNNES together with members of Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) UNNES, led by Ibu Karniti S Martono, joined an educational visit to UNNES Ecofarm.
DWP UNNES is an organization consisting of the wives and family members of UNNES civil servants, focusing on family economic empowerment, educational support, and various social activities to improve the welfare of its members and their families. In this program, DWP members accompanied the children to take part in environmental education activities designed to foster responsibility and care for nature from an early age.
The visit offered an engaging, hands-on learning experience. Children observed and learned about agriculture through the cultivation of mustard greens, spinach, water spinach, chili, eggplant, and tomatoes. They were also introduced to modern farming methods such as soil-based planting, hydroponics (cultivation without soil using nutrient-rich water), and aquaponics (a system combining fish farming and plant cultivation). These approaches made learning more interactive and memorable.
Head of the Subdirectorate of Conservation and Manager of UNNES Ecofarm, Prof. Dr. Nana Kariada Tri Martuti, M.Si., emphasized the importance of this initiative. “We are delighted with the children’s enthusiasm. This activity is a concrete step in nurturing environmental awareness from an early age. Hopefully, they will grow into a generation that is more caring and responsible in managing natural resources,” she said.
Meanwhile, Head of PAUD Sekar Nagari, Mrs. Yayuk, expressed her appreciation. “The children are not only learning theories in the classroom but also experiencing the real process of cultivation. This activity is very valuable in helping them understand and respect the role of nature in everyday life,” she explained.
The educational visit served not only as recreation but also as a meaningful foundation for building children’s character to be more environmentally conscious. It also demonstrates UNNES’s ongoing efforts in promoting environmental education and sustainable living practices within the community.
