On Monday, 21 April 2025, lecturers, administrative staff, and members of the academic community participating in the weekly flag ceremony wore traditional Indonesian attire to commemorate Kartini Day. Raden Ajeng (R.A.) Kartini is widely recognized as a pioneer of women’s emancipation in Indonesia who advocated for women’s rights to education and equal opportunities. Therefore, Kartini Day has become an important symbol of gender equality and aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality.

During the ceremony, representatives of the lecturers, administrative staff, and employees of FMIPA emphasized that the spirit of Kartini is not only about honoring the struggle of Indonesian women but also about recognizing that women should have equal opportunities to pursue successful careers and achieve their highest potential while continuing to fulfill their responsibilities within the family. This principle reflects FMIPA’s commitment to promoting a healthy balance between professional development, family life, and contributions to society.

This commitment is reflected in the strong representation of women in senior academic positions at FMIPA UNNES. Of the faculty’s 42 full professors, 25 are women, demonstrating that FMIPA provides equal opportunities for women to advance to the highest academic ranks. Their achievements serve as inspiring role models and informal mentors for female students, encouraging them to pursue careers and leadership roles in science, technology, and higher education.

FMIPA UNNES also provides a range of facilities that support women’s participation in academic life. The faculty operates a lactation room in Building D12, which is available for lecturers, administrative staff, and students who are breastfeeding. In addition, the spacious lobby area of Building D12 serves as a temporary waiting area for the children of lecturers and staff during the weekly morning assembly, allowing parents to attend official university activities before taking their children to school. These facilities reflect the faculty’s commitment to creating a family-friendly learning and working environment that supports women’s participation in higher education and academic careers.

FMIPA UNNES also routinely monitors student academic performance by gender as part of its efforts to ensure equitable educational outcomes. In 2025, the faculty graduated 1,286 students with an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.65 on a 4.00 scale. Based on gender, the average GPA of male graduates was 3.66, while female graduates achieved an average GPA of 3.67. These results demonstrate that male and female students perform at comparable academic levels, reflecting equal learning opportunities regardless of gender.

These initiatives demonstrate that FMIPA UNNES commemorates Kartini Day not merely as a ceremonial event, but as an opportunity to reinforce the principles of gender equality through supportive facilities for women, equal opportunities for academic career advancement, and continuous monitoring of academic achievement across genders. These efforts are expected to foster an inclusive academic environment, empower women to reach their full potential, and strengthen a culture of mutual respect throughout the university community.

These initiatives contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by promoting gender equality, providing facilities that support women’s participation, and monitoring gender parity in academic achievement. They also contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students.

Semarang – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), continues to strengthen its commitment to creating an inclusive, safe, and gender-equal academic environment through a range of institutional policies, facilities, and educational initiatives.
