The community service team from Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) conducted a community engagement program entitled Utilization of Used Mineral Water Plastic Waste for Horticultural Cultivation in Limited Spaces<\/em> on Saturday, May 10, 2026. The activity took place from 09.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. at Agathis Street RT 10 RW 08, Plamongansari Housing Complex, Plamongansari Village, Pedurungan District, Semarang.<\/p>\n\n\n

The program was initiated in response to concerns regarding the increasing amount of single-use plastic waste, particularly used bottles and gallon containers, as well as the public demand for horticultural products such as chili peppers, whose prices often increase significantly at certain times. Through this activity, the team introduced the use of plastic waste as a simple, affordable, and environmentally friendly planting medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, used gallon containers were utilized as planting pots, while used plastic bottles were cut into two sections. The upper section was used as a planting container, while the lower section functioned as a water reservoir, allowing the plants to retain moisture without requiring daily watering. This technique is expected to become an effective solution for horticultural cultivation in narrow urban residential areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The community service team consisted of Prof. Dr. Dyah Rini Indriyanti, M.P., Prof. Dr. Priyantini Widiyaningrum, M.S., and Dr. Siti Alimah, M.Pd. from the Department of Biology, as well as Prof. Sri Sumartiningsih, S.Si., M.Kes., Ph.D. from the Faculty of Sports Science, UNNES. The activity also involved two Biology students, Muhammad Abdul Wahab and Reski Rahmadani Rusmanto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was attended by the Head of the Plamongansari Community Empowerment Institution (LPMK), Suparno; the Head of Social Welfare Affairs of Plamongansari Village, Helti Sinta; the Head of Neighborhood Association (RW) and Chair of the Sari Maggot Farmer Group, Muji Slamet; the Head of RT, Wisnu Wibowo; members of the Sari Maggot Farmer Group; and a representative of the Agricultural Extension Officers (PPL), Lina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity received enthusiastic participation from the community. A total of 20 gallon containers were planted with chili seedlings and taken home by participants for further care. Other horticultural seedlings prepared for planting included tomatoes, kale, celery, kailan, spinach, and several other vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This activity supports the conservation-oriented vision of UNNES and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger<\/em>, which focuses on food security, improved nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. In addition, the program aligns with the Indonesian government\u2019s Asta Cita agenda in promoting national self-reliance through food self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
