The gases measured are the result of burning various waste in the campus environment, including leaves, plastic, paper (cardboard) and Styrofoam. The smoke from burning waste can cause air pollution, potentially causing health and environmental problems. Air pollution occurs if substances or energy or components are introduced but the air is already saturated, so it cannot decompose, distribute and spread it. This can be interpreted as meaning that the incoming pollutant exceeds the established air quality standards, therefore, to ensure whether there is potential pollution, it is necessary to measure the concentration/level of the pollutant.

The measurement results show that burning Styrofoam waste with a mass of 30 grams and with a measuring distance of 30 cm, has the highest CO gas content of 700 ppm, while for NO2 gas, plastic waste has the highest content of 5.3 ppm. Apart from being used to determine the concentration of polluting gases, the results of this activity/project can also be used as recommendation material for determining appropriate waste management around the UNNES campus. Proper waste management can use sustainable principles by implementing 3R, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

In mid-January 2024, Science Education Study Program students measured CO (Carbon Monoxide) and NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide) gas levels around the UNNES Campus as a project for the Environmental Science Course.
