UPT Pengembangan Konservasi Unnes Budidaya Maggot Atasi Masalah Sampah Organik

UPT Pengembangan Konservasi Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) menemukan cara yang efektif dalam mengolah sampah organik, yaitu dengan menggunakan maggot.

Sampah organik yang dihasilkan oleh kampus UNNES selain diolah menjadi kompos juga digunakan sebagai pakan maggot yang memiliki nilai jual tinggi untuk pakan ternak. Maggot sendiri merupakan larva dari lalat tentara hitam atau black soldier fly (BSF).

Prof Amin Retnoningsih selaku kepala UPT Pengembangan Konservasi (Bangvasi) UNNES menjelaskan bahwa budidaya maggot dilakukan di Tempat Pengolahan Sampah Terpadu (TPSP) milik UNNES untuk mengatasi persoalan sampah yang ada di kampus daerah Sekaran, Gunungpati.

“TPSP ini menjadi peran serta UNNES untuk menjaga konservasi lingkungan. Bagaimana kita mengolah sampah dengan menjadikan kompos dan budidaya maggot,” jelasnya pada Kamis (3/6).

Maggot digunakan untuk mengurai sampah daun yang merupakan penyumbang sampah terbesar di UNNES. Total produksi sampah daun di UNNES mencapai 12ton atau 90% dari jumlah total sampah yang ada.

Maggot sendiri diketahui memiliki protein yang sangat tinggi dan banyak digunakan sebagai pakan ternak. Oleh karena itu, budidaya maggot juga menjadi peluang usaha yang cukup menjanjikan.

“Jumlah pohon di UNNES ini kan sangat banyak, nah daun sampah ini diolah untuk menjadi pakan maggot. Di satu sisi kita bisa mengatasi pengolahan sampah organik, disisi lain kita juga mendapatkan keuntungan penjualan maggot,” jelas Amin.

Beliau mengungkapkan bahwa sampai saat ini produksi maggot mencapai 200kg per bulannya. Produksi maggot diperkirakan akan semakin meningkat jika perkuliahan kembali berjalan secara luring.

Penanggung Jawab Produk BSF TPSP UNNES, Pandu Saputra menjelaskan jika maggot atau larva BSF yang dimiliki UNNES selain diberi pakan sampah daun, juga bisa diberi pakan sampah sisa makanan berupa buah.

Pandu juga menjelaskan bahwa masa panen maggot ini cukup cepat, mulai dari telur hingga menetas hanya memakan waktu kurang lebih dua pekan.

Untuk penjualan, maggot yang dibudidaya UNNES ini biasa dijual di Semarang, Kendal, dan Salatiga. Permintaan maggot di pasaran sangat tinggi dan membuat pihak TPST UNNES kewalahan untuk memenuhi permintaan pasar. Maggot ini biasanya digunakan untuk pakan burung berkicau, ikan, dan lainnya.
