Tim Pengabdian dari Gugus Konservasi dan Pengembangan Karakter Fakultas Teknik Universitas Negeri Semarang pada Minggu, 3 Oktober 2021 mengadakan kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat di RT 04 RW 04, Kelurahan Pakintelan, Kecamatan Gunungpati, Kota Semarang.

Kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat ini memberi pelatihan kepada warga tentang pembuatan kompos dari limbah. UNNES secara aktif mendorong masyarakat untuk memanfaatkan dan mengolah limbah menjadi kompos.

Tim pengabdian ini terdiri dari Atika M.Pd selaku ketua tim, Wahyuningsih M.Pd, Sudiyono M.Pd, serta Wakil Dekan 3 Fakultas Teknik UNNES Dr. Wirawan Sumbodo. Tim ini juga dibantu oleh sejumlah mahasiswa, yaitu Rifqi Dwi Priyantama, Intan Syara Zain, dan Aliviya Kamila Umma Masyithoh.

“Proses pembuatan kompos sebetulnya tidaklah sulit. Masyarakat bisa memanfaatkan limbah yang mudah ditemui di sekitar, seperti limbah tanaman, limbah organik rumah tangga, hingga kotoran hewan,” Tutur Atika.

Beliau juga menambahkan bahwa secara teknis, pembuatan kompos bisa dipercepat dengan menggunakan aktivator atau biang kompos. Fungsi dari biang ini adalah untuk mempercepat pelapukan bahan organik menjadi kompos.

Wahyuningsih juga menjelaskan bahwa ada beberapa tahapan yang harus dilakukan dalam proses pembuatan kompos. Antara lain ialah bahan kompos harus dicacah dahulu, aktivator perlu tercampur secara merata ke seluruh bahan kompos, serta bahan kompos harus mengandung kadar air yang cukup.

“Bahan yang terlalu kering lebih sulit dikomposkan, namun jika terlalu basah juga akan menghambat proses pengomposan. Untuk bak penampungan perlu ditutup agar melindungi bahan dari air hujan, cahaya matahari, penguapan, dan perubahan suhu,” tambahnya.

Tim pengabdian memberikan contoh cara pembuatan kompos padat dalam skala rumah tangga yang memanfaatkan limbah tanaman atau daun kering dengan media bak atau tong penampungan.

Prosesnya cukup singkat. Pertama, bahan kompos terlebih dahulu dipotong kecil-kecil atau dicacah dan diletakkan di atas terpal plastik. Kemudian, molases atau tetes tebu yang sudah dilarutkan ke dalam air ditambahkan aktivator (EM4). Larutan tersebut lalu diaduk bersama bahan kompos hingga merata.

Langkah terakhir, kompos dimasukkan ke dalam tong penampungan. Dibutuhkan waktu kurang lebih lima hari agar kompos bisa matang, atau memiliki ciri bau sepeti tape dan berwarna keputihan yang menandakan ada lapisan jamurnya.

Untuk proses lengkapnya, masyarakat bisa mencontoh atau mencari informasi dari berbagai sumber, seperti buku, internet, atau sumber informasi lainnya.
