Limbah plastik telah berdampak serius pada lingkungan. Diperlukan usaha sistematis untuk mengatasi persoalan tersebut agar tak menjadi beban bagi generasi mendatang. Selain mengurangi penggunaan plastik sekali pakai, mengganti plastik dengan bahan ramah lingkungan bisa menjadi alternatif solusi.

Sebanyak lima mahasiswa Universitas Negeri Semarang berhasil menjuarai ajang internasional Youth International Science Fair pada kategori Environmental Science. Mereka membawakan inovasi berupa sedotan dari kulit buah naga, sehingga tidak berdampak buruk bagi lingkungan. Sedotan tersebut bahkan bisa dimakan. Kelima mahasiswa itu adalah Melissa Salma Darmawan (Pendidikan IPA), Fitri Daeni (Ilmu Lingkungan), Bella Setya Ginanti (Ilmu Lingkungan), Tessa Surya Kurniawan (Manajemen), dan Futwi Larasati (Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris). Mereka dibimbing oleh Prasetyo Listiaji SPd MSc, dosen Pendidikan IPA.

Lomba diselenggarakan pada 15 Maret 2022 secara luring dan daring. Lomba yang berpusat di Jakarta ini diikuti oleh sejumlah peserta dari mancanegara, antara lain dari Malaysia dan Thailand. “Inovasi yang kami bawakan berjudul Edible Straw From Dragon Fruit Peel Waste: Profitable and Potential Innovative Product to Overcome The Problem of Plastic Straw Waste,” ujar Futwi Larasati.

Ia menjelaskan, riset untuk inovasi ini sudah dimulai sejak 2021 karena keinginan untuk mengurangi limbah plastik yang begitu besar di Indonesia. Berdasarkan data yang ditelusuri oleh tim, Indonesia bahkan menjadi penghasil sampah sedotan plastik terbesar kedua, yaitu mencapai 93.244.847 batang per hari. Sedotan yang ramah lingkungan, bahkan enak dimakan, diharapkan mampu mengatasi sampah sedotan plastik di Indonesia yang semakin menumpuk.

Futwi mengatakan, untuk bisa membuat sedotan ini, diperlukan teknik dan sejumlah bahan lain. Prosesnya dimulai dari membersihkan kulit buah naga lalu dipotong kecil. Setelah itu, diblender sampai halus dan dicampur dengan tepung yang sudah khusus yang sudah disiapkan. Campuran itu lalu dimasukkan ke dalam mesin mixer. Adonan dicetak lalu dimasukkan ke dalam mesin oven. “Setelah berbentuk sedotan, lalu dikemas dengan kertas,” kata gadis kelahiran Grobogan itu.

Ia berharap warga masyarakat, termasuk pemilik resto dan warung, semakin sadar akan bahaya limbah plastik. Ke depan, ia berharap sedotan ini bisa dilirik oleh industri yang lebih besar sehingga bisa diproduksi secara massal dan menjangkau masyarakat luas. “Tentu untuk mengurangi limbah plastik,” ujarnya. Meski demikian, Futwi menyadari jika harga jual produknya masih terlampau mahal jika dibandingkan dengan sedotan plastik pada umumnya.
