Mahasiswa Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) berhasil mengembangkan material ramah lingkungan berbasis limbah kulit jeruk untuk membantu membersihkan air yang tercemar limbah pewarna tekstil. Inovasi ini menjadi salah satu bentuk kontribusi mahasiswa terhadap pengembangan teknologi hijau di Indonesia.

Inovasi ini dikembangkan oleh tim Cqure yang terdiri dari Muhammad Adam Purnawan (Teknik Kimia 2022), Shaka Kusuma Nurjati (Teknik Kimia 2022), Fakhri Ahmad Kurniawan (Ilmu Lingkungan 2023) dan Faatin Nisriinaa Zain (Teknik Kimia 2023), di bawah bimbingan Dr. Eng. Maulida Zakia, S.T., M.Eng. dari Departemen Teknik Kimia UNNES. Penelitian yang mereka lakukan juga berhasil lolos dalam ajang Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa Riset Eksakta (PKM RE) 2025 yang diselenggarakan oleh Kemdikbudristek.

Penelitian ini berangkat dari keprihatinan terhadap limbah cair industri tekstil yang masih banyak mengandung zat pewarna sintetis berbahaya, seperti methyl orange, yang sulit diuraikan secara alami. Melalui pendekatan teknologi nanomaterial, tim Cqure mencoba memanfaatkan limbah kulit jeruk yang kaya akan karbon untuk menghasilkan material baru yang dapat berfungsi sebagai fotokatalis.

Kulit jeruk diolah menggunakan metode one step hydrothermal synthesis menjadi nanokomposit nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots titanium dioksida (NCQDs/ TiO₂). Material ini memiliki kemampuan menyerap cahaya tampak dan mempercepat reaksi pemecahan senyawa berbahaya di dalam air. Dengan teknologi ini, proses pembersihan air menjadi lebih efisien dan tidak menimbulkan limbah baru.

Berdasarkan hasil uji laboratorium, material yang dikembangkan menunjukkan performa tinggi dalam menguraikan zat pewarna sintetis. Analisis FTIR dan SEM EDX memperlihatkan struktur material yang seragam dengan distribusi unsur karbon, nitrogen, dan titanium yang stabil. Sementara itu, uji fotodegradasi membuktikan bahwa material ini mampu menurunkan konsentrasi methyl orange secara signifikan di bawah penyinaran cahaya tampak.

Selain menghasilkan temuan baru, penelitian ini juga berkontribusi terhadap Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), terutama poin 6 tentang Air Bersih dan Sanitasi Layak serta poin 12 tentang Konsumsi dan Produksi yang Bertanggung Jawab. Termasuk juga Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pada poin 9 tentang Industri, Inovasi dan Infrastruktur. Melalui pendekatan ilmiah ini, mahasiswa UNNES berharap dapat menginspirasi generasi muda lain untuk berinovasi dari potensi alam Indonesia.

Tim Cqure juga aktif membagikan perjalanan riset dan hasil pengujian mereka melalui akun Instagram @pkmre_cqure_unnes. Upaya ini dilakukan untuk memperkenalkan sains terapan kepada masyarakat serta menumbuhkan kesadaran akan pentingnya penelitian berkelanjutan di bidang lingkungan.

Inovasi ini menjadi bukti bahwa ide sederhana dapat berkembang menjadi solusi besar. Dari kulit jeruk yang sering terbuang, mahasiswa UNNES berhasil menghadirkan teknologi baru yang mampu membantu menjaga kebersihan air dan mendukung masa depan yang lebih hijau.
