Surakarta \u2014 Efforts to explore the intellectual and cultural heritage of the Indonesian Archipelago to support the development of 21st-century education are being pursued by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) through the 2026 DPA FISIP UNNES Research on the Serat Sastra Gendhing. The research, coordinated by Khoirul Anwar, was conducted on September 6, 2026, involving members of the research team and collaborating with KGPH Puger of the Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat as a cultural partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research focuses on examining Sastra Gendhing from a humanities perspective. The study is being conducted in collaboration with cultural authorities to gain a deeper understanding of this literary and cultural heritage, which forms part of the intellectual traditions of the Indonesian Archipelago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The collaboration with the Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat constitutes an important component of the research, as the study of manuscripts and cultural heritage requires a connection between academic perspectives and cultural authorities. Through this collaboration, the research team seeks to examine Sastra Gendhing not only as a literary and cultural work, but also as a source of knowledge that is relevant for study from a humanities perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research coordinator Khoirul Anwar said that studying Sastra Gendhing is important for developing a 21st-century education system that remains rooted in the identity and richness of local culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis research is important for formulating 21st-century education that is oriented toward the local heritage of the Indonesian Archipelago,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement emphasizes that educational development does not necessarily have to be separated from the wealth of local knowledge that has evolved throughout the history of Indonesian society. Studying cultural works such as Sastra Gendhing can serve as an entry point for incorporating local values and knowledge into the development of educational perspectives that remain relevant to contemporary needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the perspective of the cultural partner, KGPH Puger of the Karaton Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat stated that Sastra Gendhing is important for people from all walks of life to study because it contains values that remain relevant to communal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSastra Gendhing is important for everyone to study in order to live in greater harmony,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research collaboration also demonstrates the importance of strengthening connections between higher education institutions and cultural institutions or authorities in preserving, studying, and developing cultural heritage. Universities play a role in providing academic and methodological perspectives, while cultural authorities can enrich understanding of the context and values embedded in the cultural heritage being studied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a broader context, the study of Sastra Gendhing also opens opportunities to develop knowledge that connects the humanities with the needs of contemporary education and social life. Knowledge derived from local heritage can contribute to educational development that is not only oriented toward modern scientific advancement but also firmly rooted in the identity and cultural experiences of communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity is aligned with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through the development of knowledge and education rooted in local heritage; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through efforts to preserve and develop cultural heritage as part of community identity; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between higher education institutions and cultural authorities in research activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the study of the Serat Sastra Gendhing, FISIP UNNES seeks to position the intellectual and cultural heritage of the Indonesian Archipelago as a source of knowledge that remains relevant for continued study and development. Collaboration between academics and cultural authorities is expected not only to enrich humanities scholarship but also to strengthen the connection between education, cultural preservation, and sustainable community development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
