This was exemplified by Risma Putri Aulia, a student of the Sociology and Anthropology Education Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), during her internship at the Sajogyo Institute. As part of the internship program, Risma participated in the Sukajaya Community Advocacy Forum, organized in collaboration with the Bogor Raya Forum (FORBORA) to assist local residents in addressing an ongoing agrarian land conflict. The forum provided an invaluable opportunity for students to observe and engage in community-based advocacy while learning how participatory approaches can be employed to protect citizens’ land rights.

The advocacy forum brought together residents of Sukajaya Village, community organizers, and advocacy practitioners to discuss issues surrounding land tenure disputes. Throughout the forum, participants collaboratively reconstructed the chronology of the conflict, identified the stakeholders involved, and reviewed the efforts that local communities had undertaken to defend their communal land rights. The findings from this participatory mapping process served as the foundation for developing more systematic and context-sensitive advocacy strategies. The forum demonstrated that resolving agrarian conflicts requires strong collaboration among local communities, civil society organizations, and academic institutions.

One of the key approaches adopted during the forum was Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), a methodology that positions community members as the primary actors in identifying problems, analyzing local conditions, and designing collective action plans. Through this approach, residents actively contributed to every stage of the decision-making process rather than serving merely as beneficiaries of external assistance. As a follow-up, the community planned to conduct participatory land mapping to strengthen documentation and land ownership records as supporting evidence for future advocacy initiatives.

For Risma Putri Aulia, participation in the advocacy forum provided an enriching academic experience that extended far beyond conventional classroom learning. She gained deeper insights into the dynamics of agrarian conflicts, community advocacy mechanisms, and the practical application of the PRA methodology in social research and community empowerment. The experience also strengthened her analytical thinking, communication skills, and critical reflection on complex social issues. Throughout her internship at the Sajogyo Institute, she was actively involved not only in research activities but also in academic discussions, educational programs, documentation projects, and policy advocacy concerning agrarian reform, poverty, environmental issues, and rural development.

The activity highlights the importance of experiential learning in higher education. By working directly with communities, students are able to connect sociological theories with real-world social challenges while developing practical competencies in advocacy and community engagement. Such experiences equip future graduates with not only academic knowledge but also the social sensitivity and professional skills needed to contribute meaningfully to society.

This advocacy initiative also contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) by strengthening community access to justice and promoting participatory conflict resolution mechanisms. The program also advances SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through efforts to protect the rights of vulnerable communities facing unequal access to land and natural resources, while contributing to SDG 15 (Life on Land) by encouraging equitable and sustainable land governance. Through initiatives such as this, FISIP UNNES reaffirms its commitment to providing transformative learning experiences that cultivate graduates who are academically competent, socially responsible, and actively engaged in promoting sustainable and inclusive development.

Bogor – Experiential learning beyond the classroom has become an essential component of higher education in developing students’ social awareness and professional competence.
