The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Universitas Negeri Semarang has begun reinforcing a smoke-free campus policy. A sign prohibiting smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes (vapes) now stands in front of Building C2 at the Sekaran Campus, Gunungpati.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The policy refers to Rector Regulation No. 111 of 2024 on Smoke-Free Areas, which applies to all faculties. The faculty considers the regulation part of its effort to promote a healthier academic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dean of FISIP, Arif Purnomo, emphasized that universities have a moral responsibility to set an example. \u201cAs an educational institution, the campus needs to demonstrate healthy behavior,\u201d he said. He added that although sanctions are stipulated in the regulation, the faculty prioritizes guidance and education over punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among students, the policy has sparked mixed reactions. Some support it, arguing that it enhances comfort on campus. Muhammad Farrel Revano Pasya, a student of Sociology and Anthropology Education, said the policy is necessary to create a safer environment, particularly for non-smokers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Others, however, view the policy as less accommodating. Mahesa Kusumah, a History student, criticized the absence of designated smoking areas. He argued that the policy lacks practical solutions and suggested that vaping should be differentiated from conventional smoking in terms of its impact on others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The implementation of a smoke-free campus policy is also closely linked to the global agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being. By reducing exposure to tobacco smoke and encouraging healthier lifestyles, universities contribute to broader efforts to prevent non-communicable diseases and improve public health. In this context, campus policies such as this not only regulate behavior locally but also align with international commitments to creating healthier and more sustainable communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
