The History Education Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Negeri Semarang, held a public lecture titled \u201cTowards Modernity: Anti-Colonial Politics of Five Minority Figures\u201d<\/em> on Thursday, 27 November 2025, at the 3rd Floor Auditorium of Building C7. The event featured Prof. Gerry van Klinken, Senior Researcher at KITLV and Professor of Southeast Asian History at the University of Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the lecture, Prof. Gerry invited participants to revisit the anti-colonial struggle in Indonesia from the perspective of minority figures whose roles have often been marginalized from mainstream historical narratives. His insightful presentation highlighted how their political ideas and contributions shaped the nation\u2019s journey toward modernity and remain relevant in addressing today\u2019s socio-political challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This academic initiative also supports the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including: SDG 4: Quality Education, through strengthening students\u2019 historical literacy and critical thinking; SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, by recognizing minority contributions in national history; SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, by understanding social justice dimensions in the nation\u2019s struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this guest lecture, the History Education Study Program reinforces its commitment to promoting inclusive, critical, and globally oriented historical studies while strengthening UNNES\u2019s reputation as a conservation-minded university with international visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
