Coordinator of the Bachelor of Geographical Science Study Program

Dr. Rahma Hayati, S.Si., M.Si.

Initial Description

Geography Study Program is one of the study programs under the auspices of the Department of Geography FIS UNNES, which produces bachelor of science with the title S. Si, Geography Study Program was established on September 20, 2001 after obtaining approval for the expansion of the mandate from DIKTI with letter No. 3075 / D / T / 97, dated December 2, 1997.

Geography Study Program focuses on graduates who are competent in the field of geography, especially in the field of regional planning and geospatial information (Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems) based on conservation insight.

Why Choose Geography at Semarang State University?

The main advantage of the geography study program is the great employment opportunities, because the need for employment is greater than the geography graduates produced. Based on the decision of BAN-PT, No. 217/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/X/2013 Geography Department Accreditation from BAN PT A. The phenomenal achievement of this study program is that it has succeeded in delivering its students to represent UNNES in an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa) and G.Elbrush (Russia).

In Indonesia, there are only 3 state universities that open Geography study programs, namely UGM. UI and UNNES, so the number of graduates of this study program is still limited while job needs increase along with the need for geospatial information Through MoUs with related institutions (such as LAPAN, BIG, BMKG, environmental NGOs), it is hoped that it can grow marketable graduates.

Central government policy, in 1989, expects all provincial and district / city Bappeda throughout Indonesia to have experts in the field of geography, because geography graduates can have the opportunity to become environmental experts, hydrology, disaster management and mapping consultants for development planning.

Graduate Competencies

Main Competencies (mastering geography concepts, developing and applying them based on remote sensing and geographic information systems in a professional, responsible, personality and moral Pancasila). Supporting Competencies (mastering survey/research methods and techniques spatially through remote sensing imagery, IT-based mapping techniques for the development of disaster management and mitigation, spatial and regional planning). Other Competencies (bring up the entrepreneurial spirit in the field of mapping services and production, consultants in the field of environmental conservation, reliable as teachers and trainers in the field of Geography, mapping and GIS, tour guides).

Description of Lectures

The lecture system developed in the study program for most courses is carried out face-to-face, laboratory work, field practice, while for integrated learning during the study period it is required to attend field work lectures three times.Face-to-face activities are intended for scientific sharing between lecturers and students, so that the concepts developed are more based on student needs and the development of science and technology.

In addition, blended learning methods have begun to be carried out as an adaptation to the development of technology 4.0. Laboratory activities are carried out to strengthen mastery of good skills in the scientific profession by utilizing the laboratory as an innovator. Field practice activities are used to understand various real problems, and at the same time as a place to apply the results of innovations developed in the laboratory in a sustainable manner, in this way it is expected to produce professional science graduates in the field of geography.

Alumni Stories

EKO WAHYU (Oil Palm Plantation in Kalimantan)
The curriculum and learning system in Unnes Geography Study Program help graduates to be competent in the field of mapping. Many of the survey and mapping alumni of Unnes Geography study program play a major role in oil palm plantations in the region.

BANOR (coal mine in Kalimantan)
Based on the references and work achievements that I have built in the coal mining company where I work, the board of directors gives great opportunities and appreciation to students and alumni who want to join to apply their knowledge in mining, especially coal mining….Lintang (GIS Expert PT. Sinarmas – Jakarta)
Supported by a conducive learning atmosphere and a competitive learning environment, my knowledge continues to grow. The basic mapping sciences obtained during lectures turned out to be able to support my competence in working at the Palm Oil Company owned by PT Sinarmas today.
