UNNES Psychology – The Psychology Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang once again held an Immersion Study program for International Undergraduate Program (IUP) students. One of the participants was Firda Salya Mutiara, a 6th-semester IUP Psychology student at UNNES, who joined the Immersion Study at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Johor Bahru. Salya’s program took place from July 1st to July 28th, 2025.

The Immersion Study is one of the flagship programs of the UNNES Psychology Study Program and will later become a mandatory activity for IUP students. The program aims to provide direct learning experience abroad and to increase students’ understanding of cross-cultural psychology practices. During her activities, Salya was guided by her supervisor, Ms. Atika, who works as the Social and Cultural Affairs Staff at KJRI Johor Bahru. She provided guidance and directions related to daily tasks and responsibilities.
In this program, Salya joined various activities, such as observation, assistance, and intervention in consular services at KJRI Johor Bahru. She helped with citizenship documents, labor-related services, migrant worker complaints, and other consular services. Besides that, she also joined social and cultural events, such as a collaboration program between KJRI and Mandiri International Remittance, assisting activities for shelter residents at KJRI Johor Bahru, and conducting field observations about the social conditions of Indonesians in Malaysia.

“The impression I got was very positive and also challenging. I gained valuable experience about the complexity of diplomacy work and how important the role of KJRI is in serving Indonesian Migrant Workers. The professional yet warm work environment made me comfortable to learn and contribute. My interactions with Indonesians in Malaysia also gave me new perspectives about the challenges and opportunities they face. Overall, the immersion program at KJRI Johor was inspiring and expanded my understanding of international relations and public service,” said Salya when asked about her experience.
Salya also shared that one of her motivations to join this program was to apply psychology knowledge in a real cross-country context, especially in issues of Indonesian citizens’ protection abroad. Through this program, she had the chance to broaden her global perspective, practice social sensitivity, build wider professional networks, and contribute to humanitarian issues.
One of the most memorable experiences for her was joining an official visit to the Immigration Depot in Machap Umboo, Melaka, and meeting Indonesian migrant workers at Sultan Nor Ismail Hospital, Batu Pahat. This moment gave her a real picture of the human side of consular work. The KJRI team showed empathy and professionalism in handling sensitive situations, proving that consular duties are not only about administration but also about protecting and supporting Indonesian citizens who face difficulties abroad.
“I hope this experience strengthens my capacity as a psychology student who is aware of and responsive to global issues. For my fellow IUP Psychology students at UNNES, I hope this program inspires you and opens more opportunities for international study so we can continue learning, sharing, and contributing in real ways,” Salya concluded.
Salya’s enthusiasm reflects how meaningful and exciting the Immersion Study program is for students. Hopefully, through this program, students can gain valuable knowledge and experience both at home and abroad, which will support their personal development and prepare them to become excellent UNNES Psychology graduates with global competitiveness in the future.
