UNNES Psychology – The Psychology program at Universitas Negeri Semarang held a Guest Lecture for the International Class on Wednesday, August 28, attended by international students from the Psychology program in their 1st and 5th semesters at Building A6 FIPP UNNES.

The event featured Dr. Nur Farhana Ardillah Afta, Ph.D., who discussed Sign Language: The Importance of Psychological Communication in Diverse Contexts, lasting for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Dr. Nur Farhana Ardillah Afta, Ph.D., explained in her presentation that sign languages like ASL have different grammar and structure from spoken languages, involving body movements and facial expressions to convey meaning. These differences often make deaf individuals, especially those who also have autism or ADHD, have special communication needs, leading them to feel more comfortable interacting within their own communities. Although some deaf individuals receive cochlear implants to assist with hearing, they still require additional training to focus on a single voice in a noisy environment. In addition, communication among them can be done through touches on the back, shoulders, or palms, where each movement has a specific meaning. For children with intellectual disabilities, the use of images becomes an important tool for expressing their needs and desires, complementing other communication methods.

“Today’s event was truly amazing. We invite our colleague from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Dr. Nur Farhana Ardillah Afta, Ph.D., to share her knowledge with the students. It is hoped that this event can help students enhance their competencies and expand relationships for the lecturers in Psychology, UNNES,” said Ms. Pradipta Christy Pratiwi, S.Psi., M.Psi., a lecturer in Psychology, UNNES.
