In addition to exhibitions, the event features business programs, coffee cupping sessions, workshops, and business networking opportunities.

From Research to the Global Market

At the event, Co-Spice UNNES introduced its “From Academic Research to Global Market” approach, which connects university research outcomes to the needs of international consumers and industries.

Indonesian coffee and spice products, including innovative wellness beverages, were presented to visitors while serving as subjects for market testing and organoleptic preference assessments. The evaluation covered taste, aroma, color, bitterness, sweetness, and consumer acceptance of coffee- and spice-based products in Kazakhstan.

The findings will serve as a basis for refining product formulations, flavor profiles, packaging, market positioning, and marketing strategies before the products are introduced more widely across the Eurasian market.

This approach positions downstream development as a continuous process that encompasses research and product development, market validation, and commercialization. The strategy also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Around 100 Indonesian spices are showcased virtually

In addition to bringing physical products, the Indonesian delegation introduced Virtual Rempah Indonesia, a digital gallery developed through collaboration among Co-Spice, Nestra Indonesia, the Polytechnic of Arts and Creative Recreation Sciences, and the Ministry of Industry. The platform provides virtual visualizations of approximately 100 Indonesian spice types.

The gallery showcases the diversity of Indonesia’s spices not merely as commodities, but also as integral components of biodiversity, knowledge, culture, gastronomy, and nature-based innovation.

The introduction of Virtual Rempah Indonesia reinforces the message that Indonesian coffee and spices offer added value beyond the trade in raw materials. Spices can be developed for various sectors, including food, beverages, wellness, cosmetics, and nature-based industries.

This digital innovation also serves as an interactive way to introduce Indonesia’s rich spice heritage to prospective international consumers and business partners.

Secures Two Letters of Intent

A key strategic achievement of participation in Astana Coffee Expo 2026 was the acquisition of Letters of Intent (LoIs) for coffee and spice export cooperation with two prospective business partners: Jibek Joly Co LLP and Navien-Turkestan.

These LoIs mark an initial step toward more concrete commercial partnerships. The next stages will involve discussions on product specifications, standardization, quality testing, volumes and pricing, packaging, certification, and the eventual execution of export contracts.

This achievement demonstrates that university research-based innovations have opportunities to enter global value chains when supported by collaboration among academia, business, communities, government, and international partners.

Strengthening the ABCG Model

Indonesia’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, Dr. M. Fadjroel Rachman, expressed his appreciation for the achievements of Co-Spice UNNES and Nestra Kottama Indonesia. He emphasized that synergy among ABCG (Academic, Business, Community, Government) sectors is essential for bringing Indonesian innovations to international markets.

“ABCG synergy is the key to realizing the journey from academic research to the global market.”

Under this model, universities serve as sources of knowledge and innovation; businesses drive downstream development and commercialization; communities act as both users and providers of feedback; and the government supports the ecosystem and facilitates access to international markets.

The ABCG model is particularly relevant to the development of coffee and spices, as export success depends not only on production but also on quality, standardization, market understanding, product innovation, and trade networks.

Kazakhstan as a Gateway to Eurasia

The success in establishing potential business partnerships in Kazakhstan is strategically significant, as the country is one of the five members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), alongside Russia, Belarus, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan, therefore, has the potential to serve as a gateway for expanding the market for Indonesian coffee, spices, and wellness beverages throughout Eurasia.

This strategy also creates opportunities to diversify Indonesia’s export markets, particularly by encouraging the sale of coffee and spices not merely as raw materials but as value-added products that integrate innovation, postharvest technology, branding, wellness, and Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.

Research as an Instrument of Economic Diplomacy

The Head of the PUI-PT Center of Excellence for Coffee and Spice Postharvest (Co-Spice) at UNNES, Dr. Eka Yuli Astuti, stated that participation in Astana Coffee Expo 2026 demonstrates how university research can be transformed into economically valuable products while also serving as an instrument of economic diplomacy.

“We aim to build an ecosystem that moves from research to product, from product to market, and from market to global commercialization. Indonesian coffee and spices are more than commodities; they also embody knowledge, culture, innovation, and health-related value, all of which can become part of Indonesia’s economic diplomacy.”

According to her, feedback from Kazakhstani consumers will be essential in refining the products before expanding into the broader Eurasian market.

Going forward, Co-Spice UNNES and Nestra Kottama Indonesia will develop Indonesia Coffee & Spices Wellness Innovation as a platform integrating research, product innovation, sustainable agriculture, wellness, gastronomic diplomacy, and international trade.

With two LoIs secured and approximately 100 Indonesian spices introduced through Virtual Rempah Indonesia, Astana Coffee Expo 2026 marks an important milestone in strengthening Indonesia’s journey from research to product, from product to market, and ultimately to global commercialization.

From Astana, Indonesian coffee and spices are being introduced not merely as commodities but as representations of Indonesia’s research, innovation, biodiversity, culture, and value-added potential in the global Eurasian market.

September 5th, 2026 ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN — Indonesian coffee and spices have gained new opportunities to enter the Eurasian market following the participation of the Center of Excellence for Coffee and Spice Postharvest (PUI-PT Co-Spice) at Semarang State University (UNNES), together with Nestra Kottama Indonesia, in Astana Coffee Expo 2026, held on September 3–5, 2026, at […]

[16

post-8653","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kabar-kampus
["GET
