Held in two batches on September 16 and 26, 2026, the program provided international students with an immersive learning experience centered on Indonesian traditional arts, cultural practices, games, and cuisine.

A total of 43 students from Malaysia, Thailand, China, Cambodia, and Nigeria participated in the program, which was designed to promote experiential and intercultural learning through direct engagement with Indonesian cultural heritage and local communities.

The activities took place at two locations: Building B8 at FBS UNNES and Ngrawan Village, Getasan District, Semarang Regency. At FBS UNNES, participants explored traditional Indonesian performing arts through hands-on activities involving wayang (traditional puppetry) and gamelan (traditional Indonesian musical ensembles). Meanwhile, in Ngrawan Village, students took part in traditional dance activities and discovered local culinary traditions, gaining firsthand insights into the cultural richness of the community.

Through these interactive activities, participants were encouraged to engage with Indonesian culture beyond the classroom. The program offered opportunities to experience cultural practices firsthand, interact with local communities, and develop a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s diverse cultural identity.

Acting Dean of FBS UNNES, Prof. Heri Yanto, M.B.A., Ph.D., emphasized that Javana Summer Camp represents the faculty’s ongoing efforts to strengthen educational internationalization while introducing Indonesia’s cultural heritage to a global audience.

“Javana Summer Camp provides a meaningful learning environment where international students can experience Indonesia’s rich artistic traditions, cultural heritage, and community life firsthand. We want students to go beyond learning about culture through academic materials by experiencing, practicing, and engaging directly with local communities. This program also reinforces FBS UNNES’s role as an inclusive space for intercultural dialogue and exchange,” said Prof. Heri Yanto.

The program also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting inclusive, experiential learning; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through the appreciation and preservation of cultural heritage; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by fostering collaboration among the university, international students, and local communities.

Rimasari Pramesti Putri, S.Pd., M.Pd., Head of the FBS Independent Learning and Independent Campus (MBKM) Task Force, highlighted the program’s role in extending learning beyond conventional classroom settings and fostering intercultural competencies through authentic experiences.

“Javana Summer Camp is designed to actively engage students in cultural activities and meaningful interactions with local communities. Playing wayang and gamelan, learning traditional dances, and exploring local cuisine provide opportunities for participants to develop intercultural understanding, communication skills, and respect for diversity. These experiences reflect the essence of experiential learning and align with the spirit of Indonesia’s Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative,” Rimasari explained.

She further noted that the involvement of the Ngrawan Village community was a key component of the program. Rather than serving merely as a cultural attraction, the community played an active role in the learning process, creating opportunities for reciprocal knowledge-sharing and meaningful cultural exchange.

Through Javana Summer Camp, FBS UNNES hopes to deepen international students’ understanding of Indonesian cultural identity while providing them with lasting impressions of the country’s diversity, hospitality, and cultural creativity.

The program further underscores FBS UNNES’s commitment to developing globally oriented education in languages, arts, and culture, while remaining rooted in local wisdom and strengthening meaningful partnerships between higher education institutions and communities.

The Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS), Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), has reaffirmed its commitment to internationalizing education through the Javana Summer Camp: Cultural Immersion Experience.
