Marking its 125th session, the event took up the theme “Traditional Children’s Games: Do They Still Thrive?” and ran from 7:30 PM until late.

The discussion featured a practitioner of traditional children’s games from Semarang Regency, Trisno, S.Psi., as the speaker, moderated by Suseno, S.Pd., M.A., a lecturer in the Indonesian Literature Study Program at FBS UNNES. The event was attended by students, lecturers, and cultural activists interested in the preservation of traditional games amid the rapid development of the digital era.

In his presentation, Trisno explained that traditional games serve not only as entertainment but also as a medium for social learning among children. According to him, traditional games foster direct interaction between children, thereby strengthening social bonds and nurturing a sense of togetherness.

“Traditional games are not just about playing. Within them lies a process of learning to socialize, learning patience, learning to win and lose, and learning to respect one’s peers,” he said.

He also observed that traditional games remain quite vibrant in some rural areas because children there still have space to play together directly. This situation differs from the lives of children in urban areas, who are increasingly dependent on gadget-based games.

According to Trisno, the biggest challenge today is not merely preserving the existence of traditional games but also instilling the values embedded within them to the younger generation.

“Many children play, but they have not yet understood the lessons that can be gained from the games themselves. Yet the main value of traditional play lies in the process of character formation,” he remarked.

The discussion turned interactive when one participant, Arman Maulana, a student of Javanese Literature at FBS UNNES, asked about the chances for traditional games to remain appealing amid the rise of online games such as Mobile Legends and other digital platforms.

In response, Trisno said that traditional games still have a great chance of surviving if they are packaged attractively and introduced consistently to children. “One way is to hold more traditional game festivals and involve children directly. Once they experience the fun, interest will grow on its own,” he explained.

Beyond discussing the existence of traditional games, the discussion also served as a space for reflection on the importance of preserving local cultural heritage amid the tide of modernization. Through this event, participants were invited to understand that traditional games are not merely a part of nostalgic past but also a relevant means of character education to this day.

The Tuesday Legen Discussion closed with a prayer led by Widodo Wikandono and a casual chat among participants about their childhood experiences playing traditional games.

This discussion aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through efforts to introduce character education values within traditional games. In addition, the event supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by preserving local cultural heritage as a community identity. The discussion on children’s play spaces and social interaction is also relevant to efforts aimed at creating a healthy and inclusive social environment for the younger generation.

The regular Tuesday Legen Discussion series (Sarasehan Selasa Legen) was once again held at the Gamelan Hall of Kampung Budaya, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), on Monday, May 18, 2026.
