Professor Sudarmin was born in Boyolali, Central Java, on January 23rd 1966. He completed his undergraduate study at IKIP Semarang in 1990. Then he continued his Postgraduate study in the chemical studies at Gadjah Mada University and graduated in 1994. In 2007, he finished his doctoral degree at Education University of Indonesia, Bandung.
He started his career as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry Unnes Semarang in 1993. He teaches several classes, such as Organic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry of Natural Materials, and Education Research Methodology.
Many of his scientific works has been published, and some of them are classed as national standard. In addition to the publication of scientific papers, Professor Darmin has also compiled three books related to the research which he has implemented before. Most of his research focused only on education, especially science learning.
One of the excellent researches that he has done is in the form of the concept development in science learning. This development is useful to finalize the concept in science learning that is often encountered in everyday life, both textually and contextually. The further study focuses on learning etnosains.
Etnosains itself is a study of natural science based on local culture. “The idea of etnosains is the first time here in SSU,” said Prof. Sudarmin (11/2).
According to Prof Darmin, etnosains learning actually is already exist and applied in learning process in some countries like Canada, USA, South Africa, and Germany. The successful effort in developing a knowledge- culture based science done by other countries then became an inspiration for his research.
The research which is conducted by Professor Darmin, who earned his doctoral at the age of 48, has contributed as a scientific establishment of science-based knowledge and cultural identity of Java as a vehicle for enriching scientific concepts of science and improved science literacy in Indonesia.
The other contributions is in building Grounded Theory related to the formulation process, accommodation, and assimilationof indigenous scientific knowledge that has not been formalized into objective, and universal science. The output of these studies also contribute to the development etnosains or ecological knowledge as a source of diversified forms of learning that takes into account the identity and customs of the local culture as a vehicle for learning science at school.
The general objective to be achieved from these studies is to reconstruct a society of science-based Javanese culture or contain original science (Indegenious Science) and able to enrich scientific knowledge and science concepts are formalized and well-established, as well as to foster the ability of generic science for prospective science teachers.
Several research activities have been conducted by Prof. Sudarmin includes the determination of the kinds of scientific knowledge about people based on the Central Java culture, particularly in respect of culture cropping, compounding herbs, and build the Javanese Joglo house as the focus of the study (the arena of research) and a learning resources attempt to enrich scientific knowledge of science.
The next activity was conducted by exploration, transformation, and reconstruction of scientific knowledge through scientific process of assimilation and accommodation, which was continued by validation experts. Documentation on the types of scientific knowledge indigenous community based on the local culture of Central Java. It is expected to enrich the established and formalized scientific knowledge applied in the context of the broader science learning, as well as to be a vehicle to foster the ability of generic science to the students and teachers.
Last to design the implementation of learning scientific concepts scientifically is derived from indigenous knowledge based on culture cropping. It studies according to traditional herbal medicine and the culture of building Joglo houses in Java on the science learning in secondary schools and LPTKs to the subject matter of chemistry, biology and physics.
In addition to the form of research, the idea of learning from Prof Darmin is also later compiled in his latest book. The title of the book “Character Education, Etnosains and Local Wisdom” which was released in 2014.
Earlier, in 2013 Prof Darmin has also released a book entitled “Generic Skills Learning Science and Application in Organic Chemistry” published by Unnes Press. While his latest book was released in 2015 under the title “Creative Innovative Learning Model (PAIKEM model in the Context of Learning and Science Research on Character)”.
His scientific papers that have been published are such as “Remediation Misconception Orbital Atomic, Molecular Orbital and Hybridization Through Interactive Learning With Computer Assisted Simulation Animation” which was published in Indonesian Journal of Chemistry, the journal Accredited No. 1 Volume 6 Pages 104-110 in 2007. Prof Darmin wrote the paper with Dr. Sri Mursiti, M.Sc., Devi Selvia F, and Prof. Dr. Edy Cahyono, M.Si.
Prof Darmin also coauthored with Prof. Drs. Achmad Binadja, Apt, Ph.D. and Dwi Winarti a scientific paper entitled “Improving XI Grade Student Learning Outcomes on the Buffer Solution Material Through Visionary Learning Sets with by using Chemu-Ediuitament Question Card (CET-Question Card) as the media”. The journal is an innovative journal of standard chemical education published in a non-accredited National Journal Volume 4 Number 2 Pages 634-640 years: 2011, ISSN: 1979-0503.
His other scientific work is entitled “Note Taking Guided Learning Moded that is Assisted by Chemo-Eduitaiment (CET) Media on the Topic of Colloids” was coauthored by Christiani dan Drs. Tjahyo Subroto, M.Pd ..
In the Journal of Educational Sciences (MPS) Accredited by National Standards, Prof Sudarmin wrote a scientific paper titled “Learning Model of Organic Chemistry Integrated by the Capabilities of Generic Science Mastery for Chemistry Teacher Candidates” vol 16, No. 6, pages 494-503 years: 2011, ISSN: 0215- 9643.
The scientific paper that Prof. Sudarmin wrote with Rayandra Ashar was published in the Non-accredited Journal of the National-Standar Edu-Science No. 1, Volume 1, pages 1-7 in 2012. The title of the paper is “Transforming Traditional Science Knowledge to Become Scientific Science in Producing Herbal Medicine Traditionally”.
In 2013, his scientific paper was published in the journal Varia Education Accredited by National Standard entitled “High-Level Thinking Skills to Improve Student Learning Through Integrated Generic Chemistry Capabilities” number 1 volume 24, pages 97-103 in 2013, ISSN: 0852-0976.
His latest study, namely in 2014, was successfully funded. The title of the study with regard to etnosains become his excellent research. It is entitled “Model-Based Science Etnosains Learning for Embedding Conservation Character Values and Science Literacy For Secondary School Students.”
