Dinilai serius mengembangkan keilmuan di bidang Bahasa Inggris, Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris FB Unnes terpilih menjadi host English Language Fellow (ELF) 2013. Regional English Language Officer (RELO) Mr. Eran Williams, menyempatkan hadir di Dekanat FBS, Jumat (31/5) lalu untuk membahas kelanjutan ELF di Unnes.

Menurut Elan, Unnes dipilih karena FBS, melalui kegiatan-kegiatan yang dilakukan Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris selama ini, menunjukkan keseriusan dalam program-program outreach-nya.  Program-program yang diusulkan bagi ELF dalam aplikasi pun menunjukkan keseriusan untuk memajukan institusi dan komunitas.

Ditetapkannya Unnes sebagai host berarti telah mengalahkan 100 universitas lainnya yang juga mengirim aplikasi. Tahun ini ada lebih dari 100 universitas yang mengajukan aplikasi sebagai host, dan UNNES menjadi salah satu diantara 13 universitas yang berhasil terpilih.

Eran, lebih lanjut menyatakan, keberadaan ELF di Unnes tidak semata-mata memenuhi kebutuhan native speaker bagi Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, tetapi sekaligus dapat menjadi jembatan terjadinya link antara Unnes dan Kedutaan Besar AS. Dengan demikian Unnes dapat memanfaatkan link  tersebut untuk berbagai program.

“Saya berharap Unnes mau ‘berbagi’ ELF ini bilamana ada universitas atau lembaga lain yang sekali waktu memerlukan bantuan ELF tersebut sebagai narasumber dan kegiatan lain.  Sebab jumlah ELF yang ada di Indonesia saat ini masih terbatas,” katanya.

ELF yang akan ditempatkan di Unnes adalah Ms. Erica Balazs mulai akhir Agustus 2013 hingga setahun ke depan. Meski di programkan selama satu tahun, menurut Eran, ada kemungkinan ELF di Unnes diperpanjang setahun lagi jika segalanya berjalan baik.

Manfaat Bersama

Keberadaan ELF di Unnes akan memberi banyak manfaat, bukan saja kepada warga Unnes tetapi guru-guru bahasa Inggris di seluruh Jawa Tengah. Pasalnya, mengajar beberapa di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, ELF ini diprogramkan juga untuk memimpin roundtable discussion tentang tren terkini pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris bagi dosen-dosen dan membantu mahasiswa dalam  English Conversation Club dan English Writing Club.

Tidak hanya itu, Jurusan Bahasa Inggris FBS Unnes memprogramkan, ELF menjadi narasumber atau fasilitator dalam workshop gratis bagi guru-guru bahasa Inggris di Jawa Tengah dan sekitarnya. Dalam konferensi internasional tahunan yang diselenggarakan oleh Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, ELTLT (International Conference on English Language Teaching, Literature, and Translation), ELF juga direncanakan untuk bicara.

“Karena ELF Erica telah berpengalaman sebagai instruktur serta penguji  IELTS pada British Council untuk wilayah China Selatan, dan telah berpengalaman mempersiapakan mahasiswa di sebuah universitas di China untuk studi lanjut di Australia, Kanada, Inggris, dan Amerika Serikat, disiapkan pula program serupa baginya di Unnes. ELF Erica akan diprogramkan untuk bisa membantu membimbing dosen-dosen yang hendak studi lanjut di luar negeri serta mahasiswa yang terpilih dalam program Bimbingan Akademik Internasional untuk belajar IELTS,” kata Ketua Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Issy Yuliastri.

Issy berharap agar keberadaan ELF ini bisa diperpanjang sampai dua tahun sehingga dosen maupun mahasiswa Unnes serta komunitas guru Jawa Tengah dan sekitarnya mendapatkan manfaat sebanyak-banyaknya.  Oleh karena itu, pihaknya berharap Unnes dapat memfasilitasi segala keperluan ELF dengan baik dan memberikannya pengalaman-pengalaman kultural di Jawa Tengah dan sekitarnya.
